Bert Peacock a resident of Cleveland passed away December 7, 2003 in his home at the age of 86 years and 5 days. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at 3:00 pm in the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with services officiated by Pastor Dan Edens. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
William Bertrum Peacock was born December 2, 1917 in Wilberton, Oklahoma to Will and Ruth (Erwin) Peacock. As a young child the family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Bert attended school at Mark Twain, Roosevelt as well as Central High School where he graduated. After his graduation Bert enrolled at Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater where he studied Electrical Engineering.
Bert accepted employment with Armco in Sand Springs as an Electrical Engineer. He soon applied for a job with the Corp of Engineers. The employment with the Corp of Engineers took him to several different places including a job in Alaska on a military base. Bert was united in marriage to Dorothy Virginia Dobbs in Sand Springs, Oklahoma on December 24, 1939. He was also employed with several other companies including Westinghouse, Sheffield Steel as well as other government entities. In 1963 Bert and Dorothy moved to Keokuk, Iowa where he was employed with Champion Box formerly known as Horner-Waldorf Box. The company transferred him to Burnsville, Minnesota in 1968. Bert and Dorothy remained there for 15 years when Bert retired in 1983. Upon his retirement Bert and Dorothy moved to Cleveland where they made their home.
In the late 1970Ãs Bert entered into the horse racing business with his son Doug. Bert soon purchased several other horses. During his time as a owner Bert ran horses in Texas, New Mexico, Sallisaw and Oklahoma City. Bert owned several good horses but Take A Pass and Time Limits stood out the most. Bert owned Six A Pass from a colt and was a multiple time Futurity Winner with winnings of well over $100, 000. The horse racing business was one of BertÃs most favorite pastimes as well as fishing and taking a annual hunt to Nebraska for pheasant. Bert was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents and wife Dorothy on February 8, 2002 as well as a sister Milburn Davis. Surviving are his son, Doug and wife Susie Peacock of Cleveland, Oklahoma; daughter, Carolyn and husband Frank Ash of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a sister Sharon Thompson as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
