Waymon L. Smartt

Waymon L. Smartt was born December 25, 1920 at the Indian Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was the son of Wilson and Pearl Smartt. He was raised and attended elementary and junior high school in Anadarko, Oklahoma. Waymon attended high school at the Haskell Indian Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, graduating in 1939.

Waymon worked at various jobs upon graduation from high school until he enlisted into the service of his country in 1942 in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on December 24, 1944. Waymon was awarded a hundred percent disability for injuries received while serving his country.

Upon completion of his military service, Waymon returned to Oklahoma and began attending classes at Oklahoma City University. He completed two years of college before accepting a position as a cotton classifier or grader. He later accepted employment as a phonograph record salesman,

Waymon was married to Dolores Wheat on February 25, 1966 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. The couple made their initial home in Tulsa. After the birth of their daughter, the couple moved to Cleveland prior to her starting school. They continued to reside in Cleveland until after Dana graduated from Cleveland High School as Valedictorian, The couple then returned to Tulsa.

Waymon was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cleveland. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Waymon passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2002 at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of eighty-one years, one month and fifteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother as an infant, and a sister, Lois Salley.

Waymon is survived by his wife, Dolores Z. Smartt, of the home; daughter, Dana McDaniel, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and two grandchildren, Logan Shipman and Bliss McDaniel, both of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson with Pastor Dan Edens officiating. Burial was at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
