Walter Day McBroom, a resident of Mannford was born May 14, 1917 in Ada, Oklahoma the son of Joe and Lillian (Pierce) McBroom. As a young child Walter moved with his family from Potawatomi County to the Silver City Area in a covered wagon. Walter began his education attending school at Olive where he completed the eighth grade. On December 25, 1936, Walter was united in marriage to the love of his life Cleva Pearl (Posten) at the Justice of the Peace in Olive, Oklahoma. Shortly after their marriage they moved to California. Walter began working in the construction business in Indio, California building lakes throughout the area. Between the year of 1937 and 1946, Walter and Cleva moved back and forth between California and Oklahoma. This was the true ìGrapes of Wrathî. During this time their three children were born Louise, Patsy and Roger.
In 1946, Walter and Cleva established their permanent home in the Silver City Community. During this time Walter started working in the booming business of the oil industry. In the late 1970Ãs, Walter working for the local union as a laborer. Walter was one of many construction workers helping build the growing downtown area of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mr. McBroom continued working for the union, later retiring in the late 1980Ãs.
Mr. McBroom was very devoted to his church the Silver City Freewill Baptist Church which he helped construct. Walter was a member as well as an active ordained deacon of the congregation. Along with his family the church was an important part of his life. He raised cattle, dabbled in real estate and ran his own business. Mr. McBroom was a jack of all trades and master of many; there was not anything he could not fix. Walter was a man that ìwork, work and more workî was his motto.
On Sunday, May 13, 2007, Walter Day McBroom claimed his mansion in glory and now walks the golden streets at the age of 89 years 11 months and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers Jess, Joda, Irah, Gene and an infant brother, four sisters Cora, Lucille, Maxine and Goldie.
Survived by his loving wife of over 70 years Cleva of the home; three children, Mary Louise and her husband Bob Leon Haskins of Silver City, Oklahoma; Patsy Evelyn and her husband Larry Chandler of Mannford, Oklahoma; Roger and his wife Myrna McBroom of Drumright, Oklahoma; one brother Bob McBroom of Mannford, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, Leon Haskins, Dale Haskins, Tanya Badger, Chris Coker, Debra Cloud, Bruce Chandler, Paul Haskins, Angie Beadle, R.D. McBroom, 22 great grandchildren as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 10:00 am in the Silver City Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Collins, W.H. Goodman and Andrew Haskins officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Mannford, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
