Virginia June Cook

Virginia June Snelson Gravitt Cook was born on June 25, 1921 in a little town called Coweta, Oklahoma. She was the first born of John Richard and Clema Pricilla Snelson, along with nine other sibblings. Farming was their means of making a living for the family; Virginia had to pick cotton, help with farm chores, along with caring for her younger siblings. At the age of fourteen, she left home, moving to Skiatook, Oklahoma to work in a Cafe and Hotel. She was married on July 24, 1938 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Roscoe Elzie Gravitt. The couple was blessed with three children, Elize Dean Gravitt, Sharon Kay Gravitt and Richard Franklin Gravitt. In 1942 Virginia went to work at Spartan Aircraft for a nearly a year before the couple moved to Tulsa and she accepted a position for Ben Franklin Variety Store. She returned to the aviation industry for a short time working for Douglas Aeronautics before beginning a career in food service in school cafeterias. She was employed at Hamilton Junior High and Bell Junior High in the cafeteria for many years. She was always active working to help keep the family going. Virgina returned to Coweta and went to work for Midwestern Industries where she met and latter married Thomas George Cook on September 12, 1961 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The couple purchased a lot overlooking Keystone Lake and built the home they resided in for nearly twenty-eight years. During that time Virgina joined the Assembly of God Church in Mannford where she worked as a Sunday School secretary for almost twenty years. In 1999, the couple moved to Cleveland, Oklahoma. While residing here, Virgina attended the Oak Hill Church under the direction of Rev. Harrel and Betty Jones for many years. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with all her heart and spent countless hours reading her bible and praying for her family and friends. In 2009, Virginia began attending Escape Ministries in Cleveland, attending worship services and working on Tuesdays, Thurdays and Saturdays to help people in need. She was a woman of indominable courage with deep seated faith in God,___"things will get better." She provided a full measure of love and care for her family. The seed of God's beautiful love would shine through her wherever she went. Virgina passed from this life into the arms of her savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday morning, December 5, 2012 at her home in Cleveland at the age of ninety-one. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas George Cook; parents, John Richard and Clema Pricilla Snelson; two brothers, George and Howard Snelson; four sisters, Cartha Snelson, Joan Todd, Janet Snelson and Edna Burgess; and two sons, Elzie Dean Gravitt and Richard Franklin Gravitt. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Sharon and Don Hogue of Cleveland, Oklahoma; a son, Tommy Dean Cook; seven grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 Am Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Bob Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakhill Cemetery in Mannford under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
