Vernon Leroy Maxwell, a longtime resident of Cleveland, Oklahoma, passed away at the age of 72 years on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at his home.
Vernon was born November 11, 1944, in Vacaville, California. He was the son of Stillman Jasper and Dessie Jeanette (Callison) Maxwell. Vernon was initially raised and began his education in Vacaville. In the mid-1950’s, Vernon moved to Cleveland where he later graduated with the Class of 1962. Following graduation, Vernon began working at Flint Steel in West Tulsa working as a machinist. On June 12, 1965, Vernon was united in marriage to Donna Belle Copeland in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. The couple established their home in Cleveland where Vernon has continued to live. Following the closure of Flint Steel; Vernon gained employment with the City of Cleveland. He worked as firefighter, dispatcher, EMT and also served as Assistant Fire Chief as well as Fire Chief before he retired in 1995.
Vernon enjoyed taking trips with Donna and also like going hunting with his brothers and sisters. Going fishing and hunting was what Vernon looked forward to when he was able. Vernon also liked going to family reunions and enjoyed the baseball games that everyone loved playing. Vernon loved everyone especially his brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces who cared for him. Vernon was a member of the First Assembly of God Church for many years.
Survivors are his siblings Beverly Maxwell, Dana Maxwell, David Maxwell all of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Jobe Peevey of Beaumont, Texas as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, wife Donna, brothers Steven J. Maxwell, James Peevey and Earl Maxwell.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Dan Edens officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Friends may share a memory with the family online at www.chapman-black.com.
