Vernon Gene Carter

Funeral services for Vernon Carter, 66, of Hominy, Oklahoma will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 8, 2009 in the Sanctuary of the First Christian Church in Hominy, Oklahoma. Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in Belvidere, Kansas at the Soldier Creek Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Jon Graham, Jeff Fry, Travis Fry, Josh Bost, John Bost and Jeremy Bost. Vernon Gene Carter was born in Wade, Oklahoma on November 22, 1943, he was the son of Clyde E. and Rissie Mary Lou (Dalrymple) Carter. As a young boy Vernon moved with his family to Hominy, Oklahoma where he began and completed his education. Shortly after high school Vernon was called to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He was a part of the HHC 3d Brigade, 7th Infantry Division stationed in Korea. Vernon operated a teletype of several months before he was awarded the honors of being the private driver for Colonel Z. Vernon was later honorably discharged in 1970, and returned to Hominy. On August 10, 1970, he was united in marriage to Mary Leeta Bost. The couple made their initial home in Stillwater for a short time before moving to Miami, Oklahoma. During his time in Miami Vernon completed his second year of higher education in animal science. Vernon and Leeta soon returned to Hominy and Vernon accepted a position with Fredrick Drummond on his ranch. The couple later moved to Kansas where Vernon began working as a foreman for Richard Robbins at the Anchor D Ranch in Belvidere, Kansas. After many years of working on Anchor D, Vernon began working on the Kogerís Ranch for several years. In 1984, Vernon and Leeta returned home to Hominy, Oklahoma and began working for himself. Vernon is one of few people who have had the opportunity to have work and his hobby being the same thing. He was always the happiest with his family working by his side. He cherished the time spent roping, working cattle or just visiting with his family. Vernon also looked forward to traveling to New Mexico to watch his niece show her animals in the local events. Traveling to New Mexico was usually a part of the family vacation for many years. Vernon was a mentor to many young men and women through out his career as a cowboy. The most important thing in Vernonís life that he did was on December 9, 2005, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. Vernon passed from this life on Saturday morning, December 5, 2009 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 66 years. Survivors include his loving wife Leeta of the home; two sons Ray Carter and his wife Jennifer of Edmond, Oklahoma, Harold Carter and his wife Angie of Cushing, Oklahoma; three daughters Sarah Carter of Michigan, Carolyn Carter of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Tina Backman and her husband Keith of Iuka, Kansas; two brothers Archie Carter of Hominy, Oklahoma, Raymond Carter of Hominy, Oklahoma; one sister Zona Ford of Kansas; three grandsons Mac, Josh and Wyatt Carter all of Cushing, Oklahoma as well as a host of other relatives and friends that will mourn his passing. In addition to his parents Vernon was preceded in death by one daughter Michelle Dawn, three brothers Louis Carter, Robert Carter, Wayne Carter, two sisters Elsie Evans, Noby Clapper and two toddler brothers.
