Vernon Bartley

At the age of 86, Vernon Rex Bartley rejoined his bride of 64 years at Heaven’s gate to be welcomed home by his Lord and Savior Tuesday, February 13, 2018. June may have even fussed at him a little for taking so long to join her as they were hardly ever apart more than a few days!
Vernon was born April 06, 1931, in Mannford, Oklahoma. He was the son of Alec Jefferson Izer and Mary Ellen (Shaw) Bartley. He grew up and attended Keystone School in the town of old Keystone. Vernon married his high school sweetheart Sylvia June Carter on April 18, 1953. He had picked cotton as a boy before getting his first job at a local machine shop. He was so fast at making a part for military use that the company requested his military service be deferred for 1 year, plus they really liked him.
Vernon went into the military in 1954 and the couple spent a short time stateside before being sent to Germany where they spent about a year. While in the Army, he served as a telephone operator, working out of a truck when in the field. Vernon was discharged, and the couple established their home in old Keystone until the installation of Keystone Lake. At that time the couple purchased two and one half acres from his brother Thomas on what became known as “Bartley Hill” or “The Forty” (which was 40 acres) as all the family came to call it, and built their current home.
While living in old Keystone, Vernon and his brothers owned cattle and a few horses. They spent much of their free time tending the cattle, such as branding, daily feeding and baling hay to feed during the winter.
He began his steel mill career at Sheffield Steel in Sand Springs, where he worked for 39 years which included 3 company buy outs. Vernon worked in the transportation department for most of those years.
Once Vernon became a Christian, serving the church became very important to him. He read his bible daily for knowledge and wisdom to lead his family according to God’s word and better serve God.
Three families, the James Merriman family, the Dusty Rhodes family and the Bartley family decided to start a church, which began in Vernon and June’s garage which was the sanctuary. Classes were held in several rooms of the house. It was a couple of years before they found land and were able to build this very church in which we are saying goodbye to Vernon in today. Vernon served diligently as a deacon and elder for many years.
Vernon and June loved to travel and camp with their kids and there were always extra kids or relatives going along with them (yes, Jon Rowlett, we mean you!). Upon both retiring in 1993, they spent the next 15 years traveling several times a year in their motor home.
Vernon was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Ray Edward, Thomas Lloyd, Fount Boyd and sister Vinita Comer.
Survivors are four children: Teresa Morrow and her husband Clayton of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Ricky Bartley and his wife DeeAnna of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Ronnie Bartley and his wife Jennifer of Adairsville, Georgia, Robbie Bartley and his wife Keri of Owasso, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter as well as a host of other relatives and friends
Pallbearers are: Bryton Bartley, Kyler Bartley, Sean Kirtley, Evan Lowrance, Justin Patterson and Christian Franklin
