Verneice J. Morphew passed from this life on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Advance Assisted Living Center in Advance Missouri at the age of eighty-four years, nine months and twenty days.
Verneice was born on June 3, 1932 in Skedee, Pawnee County, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Earl and Lola Edna (Drake) Reese. Verneice was raised and attended school in Skedee, graduating from high school in 1950. She was married shortly after graduation and had two children, Judy and Mike Lorren Meeker. The family moved frequently throughout Oklahoma in their early life, spending most of their time in Davenport. Verneice was a stay at home mom for most of her children's time in school but later attended beauty school in Stillwater and accepted a position as a hair dresser. She worked as a hairdresser in both Stillwater and Hennessey.
Verneice was married to Robert Neal Morphew on July 28, 1959 in Pawnee, Oklahoma. The couple made their initial home in Stillwater as Robert was attending school there and then they moved to Davenport. While there, Verneice accepted a position as a teacher's aide and worked in that capacity for several years. The couple retired in 1981 and moved to Cleveland, Oklahoma where she has continued to maintain her residence. Robert preceded her in death on November 21, 2004. Upon their retirement the couple enjoyed traveling and spent countless time together on the road throughout the United States. They most often brought redbud trees back from their trips to different states as Verneice had a strong affection for redbuds. On one occasion, Bob got into some poison sumac while searching for a redbud and that put an end to the returning home with redbud trees. Verneice loved flower gardening and spent a lot of time growing flowers.
Verneice was a lifelong member of the Christian Church and dedicated much of her life serving in the women's ministry of the church. They family considered her as a sweet, calm and patient lady who was loving and extremely understanding. She considered her greatest accomplishment in life as raising her three children, Judy, Mike and Howard. The family in their faith considered their loss as God's gain. She enjoyed life to the fullest and considered her life's blessings as too many to count.
In addition to her husband, Robert Morphew, Verneice was preceded in death by a son, Mike Lorren Meeker, and her parents. She is survived by two children, daughter, Judy Bowling of Sturdivant, Missouri and Howard Morphew of Cleveland, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Wanda Louis Clark of Cleveland.
A graveside service will be held at the Cemetery Chapel of the Lawson Cemetery in Yale, Oklahoma at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2017 with David Logsdon officiating. Burial will be at the Lawson Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
