Funeral Services for Chito Torres will be held 10:00 am Monday January 19, 2004 at the Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Norman Retherford officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 pm in the Lone Star Cemetery at Rocky, Oklahoma.
Salvador Torres was born September 15, 1928 on the LaCopita Ranch in Starr County, Texas to Jesus and Maria Inez (Salinas) Torres. Chito was raised and received his education in Starr County. In the late 1940Ãs he started to work for Halliburton in the oil field. In 1951, Chito moved to Tennessee working as a farmer. He remained in Tennessee until 1954 when he obtained employment with Havana Materials in the Rio Grande Valley. In 1956, Chito moved to Cordell, Oklahoma while remaining to work for Marshall Thorne as a truck driver. During his time in Cordell he met the love of his life; LaNita Jane Nichols. On September 6, 1959 Chito and Nita was married in Cordell, Oklahoma and to this union there are three children; Jerrell DeWayne, Teresa Renee and Brian Keith. They remained in Cordell for a short time and soon moved to the Texas Panhandle. While working in the panhandle of Texas they lived in Amarillo, Dalhart, Brownfield and Lubbock building Highway 287. They soon arrived in Bridgeport on August of 1961. Chito accepted employment in 1968 with Foster Stephenson. During this time, they were building the DFW Airport. In 1971, he gained employment with Cecil York driving a truck for York Trucking. Chito continued to work for Cecil for over 10 years. In 1981, he received employment for Wayne Andreason. While working for Wayne Andreason as a diesel mechanic he built over three trucks from the ground up as well as maintaining a fleet of over 28. Soon after his completion of his last truck, he started driving once again. After driving for a couple of years, he returned to the shop and began working as a mechanic. Soon after returning to work in the shop, Chito started working for Anderson Water Well Service and after three years in 1988, he retired due to medical reasons.
Chito loved to be outside, hunting, working in his shop, training his horses and most of all being with his family making jokes and singing with his brothers. One of ChitoÃs favorite places to visit was the ìRanchî where he was born or on the deer lease. On May 10, 1961, Chito was baptized in to the General Assembly Church of the First Born.
Chito went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday morning January 16, 2004 at the age of 75 years old. Preceding him in death are his parents, two sisters Augustina Torres Pena, Helen Garcia Villarreal and Ofelia Garcia.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years Nita of the home, two sons DeWayne Torres of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Brian and his wife Dixie Torres of Cleveland, Oklahoma one daughter Teresa Richey of Lewisville, Texas; three brothers Tony and his wife Alicia Torres of Mission, Texas, Leo and his wife Lupita Torres of Weslaco, Texas, Luis and his wife Virginia Torres of Mission, Texas four sisters Rebecca Marrero of Seattle, Washington, Manuela Nino of San Antonio, Texas, Lydia and her husband Jose Angel Garza of Chicago, Illinois, Bertha and her husband Antonio Gonzalez of Edcouch, Texas. Two grandchildren Katie Torres of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Derek Richey of Lewisville, Texas as well as his mother in law Lottie Nichols, sister-in-law Verna and her husband Scott Foust, daughter in law Tami Torres of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
