Robert Carroll Nichols, longtime Mannford area resident, passed from this life and was completely healed by his Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of seventy years, eleven months and sixteen days.
Carroll was born on July 30, 1946 in Harrison, Arkansas. He was the son of Rufus and Zelma (Threet) Nichols. Carroll lived in the Harrison until he was four; then he moved with his family to Kellyville, Oklahoma where he attended school. He graduated from Kellyville High School in 1964. Shortly after graduation, Carroll was drafted into the service of his country in the United States Army service four years at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Upon his honorable discharge from military service, Carroll returned to Oklahoma to Sapulpa in 1968. He immediately accepted employment working for a company that designed and constructed golf courses throughout the United States. He spent considerable time in Oregon building courses and often laughed that he assisted in the construction of a one hole golf course in Elgin, Kansas, right near the Oklahoma border. He later returned to Sapulpa and began a long career as a machinist, initially working at various machine shops throughout the Tulsa area.
Carroll was married to Teresa Wheeler on November 14, 1981 at the Mannford Friendship Community Church. The couple established their initial home in Mannford and have continued to reside there. In 1985, Carroll accepted employment as a machinist for American Airlines in Tulsa and worked there for nearly twenty-four year before retiring in 2009.
Carroll was a longtime member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Mannford, serving as a yoke man for many years. Carroll was described by his family as a godly, caring, and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother that was an excellent provider for his family and especially enjoyed children. He spent countless hours dedicating his time to assisting with the Mannford Food Pantry in an effort to help others in the community. He enjoyed animals and especially liked raising horses, chickens and goats. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and he was considered a handyman. He enjoyed taking trips with Teresa to Branson which was one of his favorite places as well as a cabin near Elgin, Kansas which allowed him the solitude of peace and quiet. He also enjoyed attending Blue Grass festivals and listening to the music. When lacking for something to do, he could be found at a garage sale rummaging through items looking for a bargain. Carroll was also a Dallas Cowboy and Oklahoma State University Cowboy Football fan.
He is survived by his wife Teresa of thirty-five years of the home; son and his wife, James Edward and Krista Nichols of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Heather Nichols and Matt Webber of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Roman and Cody Nichols and Sarah, Lauren and Cannon Webber; a great grandson, Layton; and two sisters, Dorothy and her husband Bill Kinyon of Tulsa and Freda Cooper of Bristow, Oklahoma. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Nichols and a sister, Lavonne Marshall.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at the New Hope Baptist Church in Mannford with Manuel Parker officiating. Burial will be at the Oakhill Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Friends may share a memory with Carroll's family at www.chapman-black.com. The family requests donations to the New Hope Baptist Church in memory of Carroll Nichols, 2184 S 394th West Ave, Mannford, OK 74044.
