Mattie was born December 12, 1919 in Montana, Arkansas the daughter of Charlie and Hallie (Carter) Pannell. As a young girl Mattie received her education in Arkansas. In 1939, Mattie was united in marriage to Howard "Junior" Thomas. Mattie and Junior later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where they raised their family. Mattie continued to reside in Tulsa and later accepted employment with Zebco a division of the Brunswick Company. In 1978, Mattie was united in marriage to Howard Hawkins. They established their home in Tulsa where they continued to live for many years. Mattie continued working at Zebco until her retirement in 1982 after 23 years with the company. During this time Mattie worked in the assembly plant making the famous "ZEBCO 33" reel. In 1992, Mattie moved to Jennings to her present home near her daughter Wanda.

Mrs. Hawkins enjoyed embordering Tea Towels in her spare time. She was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Mattie E. Thomas Hawkins went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at her home in Jennings, Oklahoma at the age of 88.

She is survived by her two daughters Wanda Burrow of Jennings, Oklahoma, Billie Allen and her husband Larry of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four brothers Leon Pannell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Harmon Pannell and his wife Inez of Claremore, Oklahoma, Hershel Pannell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kennith Pannell and his wife Georgia of Tulsa, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her two husbands Junior in 1968, Howard in 1990, two daughters Dorothy Marie and Ella, one sister Mary Joe and three brothers Raymond, Argus and David.
