Mary Hill Lassiter Sneed, died January 9, 2011 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 86 years. Mary was born on November 16, 1923 in the town of Farmer, North Carolina, the daughter of Griffin Hill Lassiter and Clara Mae Morris Lassiter. Mary graduated from Central High School in High Point, North Carolina in 1941. She worked in High Point, North Carolina for the Demobilized Records Branch as a record clerk. Mary also worked at Baltimore, Maryland for the War Department in the Classified Records Department. Mary later met Woody while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina as a pilot with the United States Air Force. The couple was united in marriage on March 9, 1943 in Boise, Idaho. They lived in Kansas and later made their home in Cleveland, Oklahoma for the past 65 years. Mary was a devoted member of the Cleveland First United Methodist Church since moving to Cleveland. Mary enjoyed shopping and visiting friends. She also loved going to church and playing bingo on Friday nights. Mary believed that all clothes needed to be ironed with no exceptions. She was an amazing cook and loved making homemade pies and blackberry cobblers. Unfortunately, her children did not inherit this trait. Mary volunteered many hours of her time at the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home. Mary loved going to garage sales and traveling. She loved to visit her home state of North Carolina and returning to Holden Beach. Even though once there she would only go into the water ankle deep. Mary would always have the time of her life walking on the beach and visiting with her brothers and sisters. Mary was very adamant about the list she would make; as well as very insistent of what needed to be done before you left the house. Further more, sleeping in past 8:00 oÃclock at her home was not highly thought of. Mary enjoyed going and was always on the go. The past few years were very hard for her due to the fact she still wanted to go, but her body wouldnÃt allow it. Survivors include her husband Woody of the home; three children Steve Sneed of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Celia Lawrence and her husband Wayne of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Sue Ann Goza and her husband George of Cleveland, Oklahoma; sisters Polly Gibson, Ruth Walton and her husband Paul of High Point, North Carolina,, Cynthia Clapp and her husband Charles of Jamestown, North Carolina, Peggy Brewer and her husband Paul of Lynchburg, Virginia; grandchildren Jennifer Sneed of Brooklyn, New York, Don Woody Lawrence and Elana of Houston, Texas, Daniel Lawrence of Chicago, Illinois, Lane and Chase Goza of both of Cleveland, Oklahoma; great grandchildren Austin and Trystan Lawrence of Casper, Wyoming and a host of other nieces and nephews who Mary adored. Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Cleveland, Oklahoma with Rev. David Mingus officiating. Entombment of the cremated remains will be held at a later date in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
