Mary Carnley

Mary Katheren Carnley, long time Hominy resident, passed from this life on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Saint Simeon's Community Living Center in Tulsa. She was 92 years of age.

Mary was born on March 7, 1932, in Lefors, Texas to Roy James and Velma (O'Keefe) Farless. At an early age, she and her family moved to Blackburn, OK where she attended school, later graduating from Pawnee High School. After high school, Mary moved to Stillwater, OK and it was here that she met the love of her life, James Robert Carnley. They were united in marriage on October 8, 1955 in Stillwater. To this union, two sons were born, Jim and Gerry Carnley. Because of James' military service with the United States Air Force, they made their home in various places including Cordell, OK, High Wycombe, England, Cheyenne, WY, and Jackson, MS. Following his retirement from the Air Force, James and Mary made Hominy their home. It was here that they owned and operated M & J Grocery for many years. They later moved to Hot Springs, AR where they owned and operated Lakeland Grocery. Following James' death in March of 1990, Mary returned to Hominy and resided there until moving to Saint Simeon's Community Living Center.

Spending time with her family was most important to Mary. She enjoyed attending all sporting and other activities with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mary was an avid sports fan, in particular the Hominy Bucks, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and OKC Thunder. She was a member of the P.E.O, a volunteer with the American Legion, and a faithful member of the Hominy First United Methodist Church for many years. Mary devoted countless hours serving her church home in any way possible. She adored serving with the United Methodist Women in any capacity. The annual UMW Salad Luncheon was always near and dear to her heart. If the church door was open and there was a need, Mary was there. Along with her volunteer work, cooking, sewing, and crafting for her family and friends always brought great joy to Mary.

Those that survive Mary and hold many cherished memories include her sons - Jim Carnley (Terri) of Hominy, Gerry Carnley (Robyn) of Owasso, five grandchildren - Jimbo Carnley (Kimberly), Josh Carnley (Ashley), Julia Vaughn (Tyler), Lindsey Holmes (Billy), and Jenny Carnley, and nine great-grandchildren - Reece Carnley, Mason Carnley, Sloan Holmes, Kat Carnley, Blake Vaughn, Gentry Vaughn, Kenna Carnley, Scout Vaughn and Parker Vaughn. Besides her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister Dora Daugherty, and brothers Gene and Leroy (Bud) Farless.

The family wishes to express our profound gratitude for the loving care Mary received from all the staff at Saint Simeon's Community Living Center and Ashley with Season's Hospice.

There will be a private family burial at the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery, Hominy, where Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband James. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2024 in the sanctuary of the Hominy First United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Formby officiating. A visitation will be held in the fellowship hall of the Hominy First United Methodist Church prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. The family has requested that those wishing to honor Mary may do so by contributing to the Hominy First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Arrangements and services have been entrusted to the Chapman-Black Funeral Home of Cleveland. www.chapman-black.com
