Upon completion of her schooling, Mary moved frequently for several years residing in Oregon and Texas before settling in California during World War II. She worked during the war as a welder assisting in the war effort. During this time she was married to Louis Emde and the couple had one daughter, Joy Ann. Upon her retirement in 1970, Granny moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she resided until 1981 when she returned to Seminole and then Shawnee, Oklahoma for several years. In 1997, Granny moved to Shippensburg, Pennsylvania with her granddaughter and then returned to Shawnee in 2000. In November of 2003, Granny moved to Terlton to be near her daughter and granddaughter.

Granny lived a very full and exciting life, making many friends from the west coast to the east coast, enriching each one's life. She was a loving mother and grandmother and a wonderful friend to all she met.
