Ruth Burgess was born August 4, 1922 in Jennings, Oklahoma to the daughter of John Henry and Miranda (Hodges) Storm. As a young girl Ruth was raised and received her education in Jennings. She was united in marriage to Dewey Eldon Burgess in Jennings on January 28, 1939 and to this union there are ten children. After their marriage they soon moved to the Terlton area. Ruth and Dewey began farming and continued until the 1950Ãs. They continued to live in the Terlton area until Dewey retired in 1978. Ruth and Dewey then purchased their current home on West Cherokee in Cleveland where she has continued to reside. After they moved to Cleveland, Ruth would often fill in at the school cafeteria.
Ruth loved to cook, she was one of the best that there was. She also had to be the first in town to have ripe tomatoes as well as the largest. Ruth always loved to have her family together and was very adamant about getting everybody together during the holidays. Ruth also has made numerous quilts. She has made everyone of her children and grandchildren at least one quilt. Ruth was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Cleveland.
Mrs. Burgess passed away Tuesday evening, June 19, 2007 in Cleveland, Oklahoma at the age of 84 years 10 months and 15 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dewey E. Burgess, one son Dewey Junior Burgess, six brothers Sherman, Earl, Howard, Bus Joe, Ed and Troy, six sisters, Minnie, Mary, Alta, Nora, Ellen and Francis as well as one grandson Mark.
Survived by her loving family six sons and their wives, Tom and Elsie Burgess of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Gary and Rita Burgess of Prue, Oklahoma; Ray and Dottie Burgess of Mannhattan, Kansas; Kenneth and Loraine Burgess of Mannford, Oklahoma; Les and Teresa Burgess of Blackburn, Oklahoma; Steve and Nancy Burgess of Terlton, Oklahoma; three daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Bill Phillips of Cushing, Oklahoma; Linda and Lawrence Pettit of Terlton, Oklahoma; Joann and Jim Fugate of Noble, Oklahoma; one brother, Johnnie Storm of Florida; 27 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will include Bobby Burgess, Bryan Fugate, Charles Fugate, Andy Burgess, Gary Don Burgess, Billy Phillips, Jeffrey Burgess and Brian Parker. Honorary pallbearers will be Jessie Burgess and Eli Burgess.
Funeral services will be held Friday; June 22, 2007 at 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary of the Church of Christ with Brother Robert Prater officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
