Alva Lorraine Lay was born October 28, 1918, in Gray Horse, Oklahoma. Lorraine was the daughter of Charles Cecil and Grace (Austin) Combs. Lorraine grew up in Hominy where she began kindergarten. She later graduated with the Class of 1936 from Hominy High School. Following graduation Lorraine worked at the local telephone company as a switchboard operator. On December 25, 1941, Lorraine was united in marriage to the love of her life Gerald Coy Lay in Hominy, Oklahoma. The couple established their initial home in Hominy. Lorraine soon joined Gerald as he worked traveling throughout the United States following the pipeline construction. Later in the mid 1940's, Lorraine and Gerald returned to Hominy where they raised their four children Harriett, Kenna, Gerry and Sarita. Lorraine worked very hard as a homemaker and strived to be the best mother and wife she could be. Along with her motherly duties, Lorraine also helped Gerald with the operation of the LayÃs Trucking and Roustabout Service until they sold the company in the 1980ës. Lorraine loved to have people over to her home. Family events were usually filled with everyone showing off their musical talents; along with lots of food and pies for everyone to enjoy. Lorraine was also a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Coordinator, WMU member as well as in charge of getting food prepared and delivered for funeral dinners. Lorraine has been a member of the First Baptist Church in Hominy since the age of 10. She was presented with an award from the church for the longest active member in the history of the church. Lorraine was also very active in the PTA and Band Parents as her children were growing up. Lorraine is described by her family as ìsolid as a rock, Godly and happy.î She was very proud of her family and never complained about what life dealt her. Lorraine was asked several times about how she remained married for over 66 years. She told them ìI give God the credit and kept my family in church.î Lorraine felt very blessed and was a servant of God. Lorraine went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Monday, February 3, 2014, at the age of 95 years, three months and six days. Survivors include four children Harriett Wagnon and her husband Skip of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kenna Lou Bergren and her husband Scott of Edmond, Oklahoma, Gerry Lay of Hominy, Oklahoma, Sarita Brown and her husband Dennis of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; one brother David Combs and his wife Shirley of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; six grandchildren Jennifer Monroe of Edmond, Oklahoma, Stan Wagnon and his wife Jill of Frisco, Texas, Alicia Lay of Houston, Texas, Maston Brown and his wife Erin of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Katy and Karen Brown of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; eight great grandchildren Wesley and Mackenzie Grace Monroe, Devin and Hannah Ramirez all of Edmond, Oklahoma, Lulu and Lena Brown of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Abby and Macy Wagnon of Frisco, Texas; one brother in law Kenneth Lay and his wife Anna of Edmond, Oklahoma; one sister in law Joyce Beckham of Cleveland, Oklahoma as well as a host of other relatives and friends that mourn her passing. In addition to her parents Lorraine was preceded in death by her step mother Jontie Combs, husband Gerald Coy Lay, three brothers Mack Combs, C.C. Combs and Bill Combs; three sisters Helen Carnagey, Annie Laurie Burrell and Jeannie Lenz. Church services will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Hominy with Rev. Kenneth Lay officiating. Burial will follow in the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
