Loretta Jean Cokenower, life long resident of Jennings was born August 25, 1939 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to Leo Z. and Mildred Geneva (Axhelm) Orcutt. Jean was raised and received her education in the Terlton and Jennings. She later graduated from Terlton and was united in marriage to David Poulter on August 1, 1958 in Cleveland, Oklahoma and to this union there are three children Michael, Sharyl and David, Jr. Jean and David made there home in Kingfisher, Oklahoma managing the motel soon after their marriage. They returned to Jennings in 1967 and Jean began working as a cook in the several of the local area restaurants. Jean accepted employment with Avis in 1998 as a reservation agent in Drumright. She remained with Avis until its closure in 2001.
Jean was then united in marriage to Ronald James Cokenower at Eureka Springs, Arkansas on March 17, 2000. They made their home in Jennings and on March of 2003 Jean was elected and took office as the City Clerk. Jean served that position until May of 2004 when she resigned due to health reasons.
Jean loved to travel and collect antique marbles. She also looked forward to taking her yearly trip to Grove with her sisters to visit the Cherokee Queen. Jean was very family oriented a member of the Oak Hill Church on Keystone Lake as well as a sales representative for Avon for over 23 years.
She passed away July 2, 2004 at Jennings, Oklahoma in her home at the age of 64 years 10 months and 7 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Jerry Duane Poulter, sister Molly Bennett, brother L.D. Orcutt and Sammy Orcutt, Sr. and her husband David Poulter in 1997.
Survived by her husband, Ronald Cokenower of the home; children Michael and his wife Karen Poulter of Mannford, Oklahoma; Sharyl and her husband Tommy East of Jennings, Oklahoma; David and his wife Jennifer Poulter of Jennings, Oklahoma; sisters, Patricia and her husband Harlan Pleasant of Bristow, Oklahoma; Betty Meadows of Depew, Oklahoma; Lola and her husband Michael Hicks of Bristow, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held July 6, 2004 at 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary of the Oak Hill Church on Keystone Lake with Rev. Harrel Jones officiating. Burial will be at Jennings Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc. of Cleveland, Oklahoma.
