Lizzie Magdalene Lay

Lizzie Magdalene Lay was born on September 22, 1918 in Searcy County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of George C. and Martha V. (Hill) Butler. As a young girl Magdalene moved with her parents in a covered wagon to the Osage Area. She was raised and received her education in the Osage and Prue Schools. At the age of seventeen she met Wilbur Marvin Lay at the rural community of Middle Enterprise. The two continued courting for several years and were later united in marriage on October 1, 1939 in Hominy, Oklahoma. The couple established their initial home in Middle Enterprise where Jeff was working. The couple soon moved to the Prue area and began a ranching operation of their own. In 1956, Magdalene and Jeff moved to Wynona, Oklahoma where they have continued to reside and ranch for many decades. In 1976, Magdalene began working at the Wynona CafÈ where she was famous for her pies and especially her cinnamon rolls. Patrons to the cafÈ would travel hours for her scrumptious deserts. Magdalene enjoyed being in the kitchen. Holidays were special times around her home and it was an annual event that each holiday would evolve around the familyís favorite dishes and desserts prepared especially for them. It was not unusual for Magdalene to surprise loved ones and friends with a favorite dessert just because of her love of cooking and a means of expressing her love. In addition to cooking, Magdalene enjoyed quilting and crocheting and was an avid Wal-Mart shopper. She also loved to travel and liked spending time in the area around Branson, Missouri. She was described by her family as a great wife, mother and grandmother. She passed away on Friday, December 18, 2009 at the Jane Phillips Memorial Center in Bartlesville at the age of ninety-one. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Claude, Bob and Tom Butler; six sisters, Gladys Wilson, Grace Newport, Helen Butler, Clark House, Pauline Calhoun and Cora VanDusen; a great grandson, Chanc Davis and an infant granddaughter, Courtney Haught. Magdalene is survived by her husband of seventy-years, Jeff of the home; three children, Marvin Lay of Seminole, Oklahoma, Carol Brown of Welch, Oklahoma, and Paul Lay of Wynona, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Rusty Lay of Seminole, Oklahoma, Julie Davis of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Sandy Layton of Welch, Oklahoma, Stacie Haught of Wynona, Oklahoma, Steve Brown of Vinita, Oklahoma, and Jeffrey Lay of Wynona, Oklahoma; twelve great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, December 21, 2009 at the A.J.
