LaVaughn Emily Zumwalt was born in Tryo, Kansas on October 1, 1909 to Claude Harry and Mabel Rebecca Zumwalt. She moved with her family to Cleveland, Oklahoma at the age of three in 1912, so he father could work in the newly opened oil field operations.
LaVaughn began her education in the Cleveland Westside Elementary school and graduated from Cleveland High School with the Class of 1929 with highest honors. Since one of her goals in life was to be a school teacher in the elementary grades, she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education at Central State Teacher's College at Edmond (University of Central Oklahoma). She also attended graduate school at Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State University).
Thirty-five years of her life were devoted to teaching young children, with the last twenty-three working years in the Tulsa Public School System. Another goal in her life was to travel and to learn more about the world around her. Most of her travel included the entire United States, then Canada, Mexico and a Holy Land tour in Israel.
LaVaughn's retirement years where spent enjoying her home, dear family and friends. She also enjoyed the wild birds and squirrels that entertained her for the food she gave them. She often said that she enjoyed a full life.
LaVaughn passed away on Monday, May 10, 2004 at the Frances Streitel Villa in Collinsville, Oklahoma at the age of ninety four years, seven months and nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Harry Victor Zumwalt.
She is survived by a brother Claude Howard Zumwalt and his wife, Carolyn Sue of Owasso, Oklahoma. LaVaughn cherished her dear family and friends all along her trip through life. She will be remembered for her generosity, kindness and her sense of humor to those she loved.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the Chapel of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Lyle Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
