Joyce Laurell Whitehorn, 73, life long resident of Hominy, Oklahoma went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 1, 2010 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Joyce was born April 18, 1937 in Pawnee, Oklahoma she was the daughter of Donald Ira and Myrtle Melcina (Green) Duncan. As a young girl Joyce began her education in Cleveland, Oklahoma. She attended schools in Cleveland until the second grade and then moved with her family closer to Hominy where she completed her education graduating with the Class of 1955 from Hominy High School. Before her senior year in high school Joyce was united in marriage to the love of her life Dudley P. Whitehorn on July 26, 1954, at the First Baptist Church in Hominy. The couple established their initial home in Hominy where they have continued to reside. Joyce accepted a position as a kindergarten teacherÃs aide with the Hominy Public Schools from 1966 till 1969. Then from the mid 1970Ãs till the mid 1980Ãs, Joyce worked for Dowell as their secretary. Joyce was devoted to serving her church and Lord. She gave her whole life to sharing the word and visiting with people about salvation. Joyce was an active member of the First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in ìThe Trioî, helped with dinners for the church and supported her pastor and church immensely. Joyce loved spending time with her family; birthdays and Sunday dinners were a major part of her life. She would cook for everyoneÃs favorite dish as well as cherished the time cooking with her family. Joyce would always be the last one to set down at the table making sure everyone had what they needed. Cinnamon toast was a specialty of hers and has yet to be recreated. Joyce was her children and grandchildrenÃs biggest fan at activities without missing a single event. Joyce loved to travel and would always be ready to take friends to various appointments. One place she did love to go was to the mountains and skiing. Joyce loved going with Dudley to feed the cattle and was also a little adventurous at times when it snowed. Joyce loved to read and especially when it was to her grandchildren. She made promise to Dudley and it was ìI will keep you clean, and you donÃt let us get lost.î Survivors include her loving husband of nearly 57 years Dudley of the home, four children Joni Bost and husband Chigger of Mosquero, New Mexico, Cindy Dunlap and her husband Mike of Hominy, Oklahoma, Maria Whitehorn and her husband Randy Powell of Hominy, Oklahoma, Anthony Whitehorn and his wife Jamie of Hominy, Oklahoma; two brothers Jerry Duncan of Napa, Idaho, Ray Duncan of Mustang, Oklahoma; one sister Bernice Yonlick of Bellingham, Washington; sister in law Frances Kilpatrick of Hominy, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren Kristi Bost, Joshua Bost, Erin Dunlap, Juli Dunlap, Jason and Elizabeth Dunlap, Mary Bost, Whitney Whitehorn, Mason Powell, Andrew Powell, Anthony James Whitehorn as well as a host of other relatives and friends that will mourn her passing. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by two brothers Cecil and Donald Duncan. Pallbearers include Anthony Whitehorn, Edwin Bost, Mike Dunlap, Randy Powell, Joshua Bost and Jason Dunlap. Honorary pallbearers will be Nappy Cowan, Doug Cowan, Samuel Cowan and Mason Powell. Memorial Services will be held 1:30 pm Monday, July 5, 2010 in the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in Hominy, Oklahoma with Rev. Mark Formby officiating. Musicians will Jerry Lay singing Jesus is the Song and Victory in Jesus with Melvina Prather playing the piano. Private burial was held at 10:30 am in the Whitehorn Family Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joyce to the First Baptist Church in Hominy. Funeral services were under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
