John Newton Anglin

John Newton Anglin, longtime Cleveland area resident, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2003 at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of eighty-seven years, seven months and twenty-two days.

John was born on May 12, 1915 in Drumright, Oklahoma. He was the son of Roy Ernest and Agnes A. Anglin. John was raised and attended school in Stillwater, graduating from Stillwater High School in 1932. John was a three sport letterman in high school in football, basketball and wrestling. He was a two-time State Champion Wrestler for the Pioneers of Stillwater High School.

After graduation, John assisted his father in the operation of their family owned grocery store in Stillwater for a few years. John was married to Emily Theola Pock on January 1, 1938 in Stillwater. The couple made their initial home in Stillwater and then John entered into the service of his country in the United States Army during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, the couple moved to a farm southwest of Cleveland, Oklahoma. After residing in Cleveland a short while, they moved their family to the Neosho and Anderson, Missouri area for nearly four years before returning to Cleveland for good. The couple raised five children: Jay, Judy, Jimmie, Janie and Joe.

John was employed by the Wade Whitten Oil Company for nearly thirty years. He started working in the oilfield as a roustabout and retired in 1980 as a driller. After his retirement, John stayed close to the farm raising some of the best hunting and hound dogs in this part of the country. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

John was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cleveland where his funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 7, 2003. Dr. Larry Wilson and Rev. George Boston will be officiating. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.

He is survived by wife of sixty-five years, Emily of the home; three sons and their wives, Jay E. and Faye Anglin, Cleveland, Oklahoma, Jimmie E. and Linda Anglin, Cleveland, Oklahoma, Joe T. and Cathy Anglin, Ponca City, Oklahoma; two daughters, Judy A. and her husband, Stan Breedlove, Sand Springs, Oklahoma and Janie I. Patterson, Cleveland, Oklahoma; twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Delbert Anglin; two grandchildren; Jay Edward Anglin, Jr. and Lisa Shipp; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Pritchard.
