John Wesley Roe, known as Johnny, was born May 2, 1947 in Bristow, Oklahoma. He was the son of Earl Benjamin and Lillie Ellen Roe. Johnny moved with his family to Blackburn at an early where he was raised and attended school.
Shortly after completion of his schooling , Johnny was married to Susan Fisher and then enlisted into the service of his country in the United States Army. He served a tour of duty in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict and upon his honorable discharge returned to Cleveland, Oklahoma. He then accepted employment with Yuba Heat building heat exchangers for a few years.
In the mid 1970's, Johnny accepted employment with Perrin Drilling Company in Hominy and worked in the oilfields of Northeastern Oklahoma on a drilling rig for nearly fifteen years. He was later married to Charolit Starrett and they remained together for over twenty years.
After working for Sherm Perrin, Johnny was employed as a Pawnee County Deputy Sheriff for a couple of years and retired from law enforcement after an unsuccessful attempt to be elected Pawnee County Sheriff. He later accepted employment with Stone Container and then worked as a pipe fitter through the Pipe fitter's Local 430. Johnny was also employed during much of his lifetime hauling hay and cutting firewood for many people throughout the community.
Johnny was active in the Assembly of God Church for many years, attending churches in Pawnee, Skedee and Cleveland. While a member of the Skedee Assembly of God, he was a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher and assisted the Pastor with the youth program.
Johnny loved all types of outdoor activities including hunting and fishing. He was an avid University of Oklahoma Sooner and Cleveland Tiger fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family including his children and grandchildren.
Johnny passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at the Cleveland Area Hospital at the age of fifty-five years, eight months and six days. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frankie Killman.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer W. Roe, of the home; four sons, John M. and Jennifer Roe, Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Benjamin Charles and Terena Roe, Cleveland, Oklahoma, Jordan Constant of the home and Jantzen Roe, of the home; daughter, Amy and Keith Funkhouser, Pawnee, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, five sisters, Viola Moles, Pawnee, Oklahoma, Helen and Bob Singer, Coweta, Oklahoma, Earlene McQuain, Cleveland, Oklahoma, Louise Killman, Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Audrey and Ronald Vineyard, Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, January 11, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Cleveland with Pastor Dan Edens officiating. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
