John Scovil, a resident of Mannford, was born May 16, 1921 in Old Mannford, Oklahoma to Cherokee Martha and Charles M. Scovil. Soon after, his family moved to Orlando, Oklahoma where he was raised and attended school. At the age of 8, John accepted Jesus as his personal savior and was baptized. He graduated from Orlando High School in 1939, after which he spent 2 years attending Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. It was 1942 and the World was at war, John enlisted in the Navy and served his country for the next 3 years. He was awarded both the World War II Victory and American Campaign Medals before being honorably discharged as a Seaman 1st Class. After the war, John worked as a roughneck in the Oklahoma and Colorado oilfields until November 1956. On October 2, 1955, in the town of Mannford, John married the love of his life, Helen Imogeane (Sissom) Scovil. They met in a strawberry field and spent the next 47 years together raising 2 wonderful daughters, Leanne and Libbie. In November 1956, John went to work for the United States Post Office as a Rural Mail Carrier and continued his service until August 1988 when he retired. John was a member of Lakeview Christian Church, Tulsa Archeological Society, and Keystone Crossroads Historical Society. In his retired years as was throughout his life John enjoyed many things especially hunting and fishing but his grandchildren, Caleb, Josh, Sky, and Hannah, were his true passion.
John was a devout Christian who poured his heart into the church. His Savior and Church were at the center of his heart and defined the man he was and always shall be. Everyone who met John was blessed and better for it. John never met a stranger and knew everyone as friend. Some knew him as the mailman, friend, Uncle, Son, Brother, Husband, Daddy, Grampa, or Papa John but all of us knew him as a true man of God.
Survived by his wife, Helen; daughters Leanne and Libbie, their husbands Dow and Jim, and their children, Caleb, Josh, Sky, and Hannah, all of Mannford, Oklahoma; brother Charles M. and Steda Scovil, Jr of Bixby, Oklahoma; Two sisters, Betty and Patty and their husbands Fred Bohn and Raymond Volentine, all of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
