Jimmy Vail Adsit

Jimmy Vail Adsit passed from this life on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home at the age of 70 years old. Jim was born December 30, 1939, in Terlton, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of seven children born to George Grover and Myrtle Ruth (Rothwell) Adsit. As a young boy, Jim grew up in the Cleveland Area. He began his education in Cleveland and later graduated from Cleveland High School with the Class of 1959. Following graduation, Jim began working in the oil fields of Pawnee and Osage County, and later served in the U.S. army. Jim met the love of his life, Judith Carolyn Megee, who was from Broken Arrow, OK, and they were united in marriage on December 21, 1962 in Wagoner, OK, after a year-long courtship. The couple established their first home in Covington, Oklahoma, after Judy graduated from OBU in 1963. Jim was employed by Sinclair Atlantic Richfield, and was later transferred to Thomas, Oklahoma, where the couple welcomed their first son. Jim and Judy later moved to Carmi, Illinois, where they resided for five years, welcoming a second son. During their time in Illinois they were fortunate enough to help establish Stewart Street Baptist Church where they were Charter Members. Jim was then transferred to Bairoil, Wyoming, welcoming a daughter to the family before finally returning to Cleveland, Oklahoma, in 1970. When Jim and Judy returned, they purchased the Ice Dock and operated it until they closed the facility in the late 1970's. Jim continued working both in the oil field as a pumper as well in carpentry for many years. Jim had a unique, fun-loving and outgoing personality. He loved to hunt and fish during his spare time, but most of all he loved working in his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with his friends and family. Jim was generous with his time and his friendship, and was always willing to lend a hand to a neighbor. In the early 1980's, Jim was elected and served on the Cleveland City Council, later holding a position as Vice Mayor. Jim spent numerous hours visiting with friends at the Hickory House (tapping on his coffee cup with his spoon). He was an NRA Lifetime member, American Legion member and member of the First Baptist Church. Jim enjoyed having his family, especially his grandchildren, at his home. He was always anxious for the summers to arrive, knowing his grandchildren were coming to stay. Jim is described as ìOne of a Kindî and as "A Unique Slice of Oklahoma". Survivors are his wife Judy of the home; three children, Jimmy Dale Adsit of Layton, Utah, Andy Lee Adsit of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Julie Ann Adsit Whitman of Norman, Oklahoma; four brothers, Jack Adsit of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bill Adsit of Mannford, Oklahoma, Bob Adsit of Owasso, Oklahoma, Jerry Adsit of Oswega, Kansas; two sisters, Wanda Kelso of Glendale, Arizona, Myrtle June Edgar of Tulsa, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Jasmine, Joshua and Julius Adsit, Hazen Adsit, Michael, David and Jennifer Whitman, as well as a host of other relatives and friends that will mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Ruth Adsit. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, October 22, 2010 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
