Jerry Lynn Smith was born to Bill and Ruth (Comer) Smith on November 14, 1950 at Yale, Oklahoma. Jerry spent his early years in Cleveland, Oklahoma. At the age of six years old he moved with his family to Cushing, Oklahoma. He started school at Rays Rock and played his first baseball game there. He told his coach that he was a catcher knowing that he had never played that position before. After that time catcher was the position that he always played.
The family then returned to Cleveland in 1962. Jerry finished his education and graduated from Cleveland High School. During his senior year he was a member of the debate team which he really enjoyed. Jerry and Diana (Newkirk) were later united in marriage and to this union there are two daughters Amber and Laura. Jerry entered into the service of his county in April of 1970. He served his time in Germany during the Vietnam War. Jerry was honorably discharged on November 5, 1971. Jerry worked as a supervisor for several years for Easy Lay Pipeline for many years. Jerry was currently giving daily care for his brother Bill as a health care worker.
Jerry gave his life to the Lord in 1960 when he was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Cushing, Oklahoma. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading fictional books especially the Lord of the Rings. However, most of all Jerry was a huge University of Oklahoma fan. He also loved being with his family, grandchildren as well as walking.
Jerry passed away Saturday, September 1, 2007 in the Oklahoma State University Medical Center at the age of 56 years 9 months and 17 days. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Survived by his two daughters Amber Elizabeth Smith-Aguilar and husband Berkley of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Laura Lynn Smith-Caldwell & husband John of Skiatook, Oklahoma; parents, W. B. and Ruth Smith of Cleveland, Oklahoma; two brothers, William B. Smith of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Darrell Smith and wife Gayla of Cleveland, Oklahoma; one sister Bonita Langley of Cleveland, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Max, Atticus, Jalen, August, Jeri Lynn and Mary Ruth Lynn as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 10:00 am in the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dan Edens officiating. Private burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
