Jeffery Carter Guthrie, Sr., lifelong resident of the Westport Area, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at his home at the age of 68 years old.
Jeffery was born September 20, 1948, in Terlton, Oklahoma. He was the son of Avery William and Margaret Ruth (Spriggs) Guthrie Briggs. Jeffery grew up in the Cleveland area attending the Rigsby School and later graduating from Cleveland High School. During his time in school Jeffery was very active in football as well as boxing. Following high school Jeffery joined the United States Navy. He served his country from May of 1966 till September of 1969. During his time in the military Jeffrey was a part of the 13thFighter Squadron stationed in Florida. Upon his discharge, Jeffery returned to the Westport area. He gained employment at Superior Hard Surfacing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After many years at Superior, Jeffery began driving a truck. He worked as an owner-operator for many years and was last employed by Asphalt Fuel and Transportation.
Golfing, hunting and competing in rodeos was a very important part of Jeffery’s pastime. He also enjoyed taking care of his cattle. Yearly vacations were always spent at the Cavalcade in Pawhuska where he would participate in team roping, calf roping as well as steer wrestling. However, the most important part of his life was his family and especially his grandchildren. He always cherished the time he could take the kids out to target practice and teach them how to shoot guns. You could always find Jeffery in his garage working on his latest projects.
