Jack Gloyd Powell was born December 3, 1924 in Hominy, Oklahoma and departed this life on Monday, August 29, 2005 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of eighty years, eight months and twenty-six days.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Albert J. and Janet (White) Powell. He was married to Freda C. Oliver on February 20, 1949 in Seminole, Oklahoma and to this union six children were born. Freda obtained her funeral director's license and assisted her husband, Jack G. in the operation of the Powell Funeral Home in Hominy for many years. She preceded him in death, on April 9, 1988 in Grapevine, Texas.
Jack G. was a graduate of Hominy High School, attended Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore where he joined the United States Army Reserves and was called to active duty during World War II. He served stateside and in the South Pacific for four years during the war. After his honorable discharge from active duty, Jack G. served an additional seven years in the reserves.
Jack G. graduated from the Cleveland College of Mortuary Science in Cleveland, Ohio and then joined his parents in operating the Powell Funeral Home. He served for many years on the Hominy School Board, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder. Additionally, Jack G. was a member of the American Legion Post 42 in Hominy, Veteran's of Foreign War Post 2002 in Bartlesville, Past President of the Hominy Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, Hominy Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Oklahoma Funeral Director's Association.
He leaves to mourn or celebrate his passing his children, David Powell of Mannford, Oklahoma, Debra P. Chapman and husband, Hugh of Bristow, Oklahoma, Greg Powell and his wife Carolyn of Hominy, Teri P. Bridges of Arlington, Oklahoma, Joe Powell of Indianapolis, Indiana; and James Powell and wife, Susan of Cleveland, Oklahoma; fiancÈe, friend and companion, Gladys Washburn of Hominy, Oklahoma; two sisters, Jean Fallin of Hominy, Oklahoma and Lee Elsey of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, David Powell, Jr. of Hominy, Oklahoma, Rebekah Powell of Mannford, Oklahoma, Tara Pierce of Verdigris, Oklahoma, Robyn Chapman of Howe, Oklahoma, H. M. Chapman of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Jack J. Chapman of Bristow, Oklahoma, Andrea Powell of Hominy, Oklahoma, Justin Bridges and Taylor Bridges of Arlington, Texas; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 1, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hominy with Rev. Mike DeMoss officiating. Burial will be at the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
