Jack Dempsey Dobbins, Jr.

Jack Dempsey Dobbins, Jr. was born June 24, 1953, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the son of Jack and Flora Dobbins. He was united in marriage to Stephanie Fields on October 11, 1991, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jack passed away at home with his loving wife at his side May 2, 2008, at 54 years of age.

Jack was raised and educated in Hominy, graduating from Hominy High School in 1971. Jack played 2nd base on the baseball team in high school and continued to enjoy baseball and many other sports as a fan and participant. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons Geoffrey and George as they learned to play sports.

Jack was always a cowboy and as a teenager he worked at the Hominy Sale Barn. Jack cowboyd locally and competed as a team roper in many events in Oklahoma.

Jack loved good food and was a good cook who sometimes remarked that he "wasn't getting nearly enough pie or cake". Jack enjoyed hosting family and friends for holiday meals, especially Easter. His smile, witty remarks, and sense of humor will be missed greatly by friends and relatives.

Jack's Osage name was Ki-he-kah-we-zhin-keh, Little Chief. He was a member of the Bear Clan and his name was given to him by Mrs. Margaret Shunkamolah. Jack was a member of Hominy's I'lon-ska dance committee and participated in the dance whenever he was home.

While Jack and Stephanie made their home in the Hominy Indian Village, Jack worked as a welder's helper on pipeline jobs across the country. Jack was a 32-year member of Pipeliners Local Union #798 and had planned to retire this year to take care of cattle. On the job, Jack had many close friends who were like a second family and have been very generous with their support during his illness. Now, he's where he can ride, rope, and tend to the cattle he always wanted.

Jack is survived by his wife and devoted nurse, Stephanie, of the home; stepsons, Trey Barnes and Michael Fields; and grandsons, Geoffrey and George Fields, all of Hominy.
He is also survived by his father Jack Dobbins, Sr. of Hominy, and sisters, Oney Timmis of Udall, Kansas, and Sarah Carns of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four nieces Teri Kater, Toni Eder, Amy Banzet, Katherine Carns; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Jack was predeceased by his mother Flora Dobbins and brother Riley.

Services are being conducted at the family residence by Mongrain Lookout of the Native American Church and David Nagel of the Friends Church. Pallbearers are Trey Barnes, Dave Holding, Pete Kenworthy, Mike Lohah, Randy McAngus, Sam Mitts, Greg Powell, and Roger Wheeler. Burial will be in the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home of Cleveland, Oklahoma.
