Jack Cox

Jack Hudson Cox a life long resident of the Hominy Area passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the age of 86 with his family at his side. Jack was born February 2, 1922 in Hominy, Oklahoma the son of Charles and Lola Frances (Kriewitz) Cox. As a young man Jack attended the school at East Enterprise and later completed his education at the Hominy Schools. During the time he was growing up Jack helped his family on the home place operate the family farm at Bug Creek. On March 2, 1944 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma Jack was united in marriage to the love of his life Maurita Maxine (Lay). After their marriage Jack joined the United States Navy on March 29, 1944. Following his basic training Jack was stationed aboard a destroyer in the Aleutian Islands. Fortunately his training paid off due to the fact he was thrown overboard in the frigid waters off the Alaskan coast. Jack was able to help in the rescue of him self as well as two fellow sailors. Upon his discharge on January 20, 1946 he returned to Hominy and purchased their current property west of town. Before he purchased his property he was told by many people that the property was worthless and he would not be able to make it produce. However, Jack has proven that with a lot of hard work and time you can make things work. At the peak of his cattle operation it consisted of over 500 head of cattle and 2000 acres of land. Mr. Cox always stated that, ìhe was lucky to have a hobby as an occupation.î Jack enjoyed taking vacations. He loved to visit Colorado, Branson, New York and Canada. However what Jack enjoyed most in life was being with his family teaching them things on the ranch that would help them carry on his legacy and continue operating the ranch. Before Jack passed away he wanted his boots on so that ìwhen he kicked the bucket he wouldnít to hurt his toe.î Survivors include his daughter Diane Miller and her husband Morris of Tulsa, Oklahoma, two grandchildren Lance Miller and his wife Elizabeth of Edmond, Oklahoma, Michon Hughes of Tulsa, Oklahoma, three great grandchildren Lauren Hughes, Libby Kay and Sarah Jane Miller, Evelyn Lott who Jack consider a sister and her two children Janice McGhee of Talala, Oklahoma and Kathy Sloan of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife loving Maurita Services were held 10:30 am Saturday, January 24, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Hominy, Oklahoma with Mervin Miller officiating. Following the services the body will be cremated and a private burial will be held at the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery and a scattering on the ranch under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
