Herbert Eugene Carter

Raymond and Virgil (Gibson) Carter welcomed their first child on June 16, 1935. This son was named Herbert Eugene Carter. He was born in the Dixie Community near Cleveland, OK. This special event took place at Herbís uncle Melvin and aunt Ruby Gibbons home. Herb passed away on October 15, 2011 at his and Berthaís home. Herb grew up in and around Cleveland surrounded by many relatives in the Carter and Gibbons families. It is said you cannot ìtalkî about anybody because it is probably a relative. Herbís father was a minister, serving in the evangelistic field and pastoring in Solomon, Arizona and Weston Missouri. Herb had a Christian heritage as his grandfather Gibbons was ìan old time preacherî, having pastored his little country church in the Dixie community many, many years. As he loved being outside, he spent many weekends at his grandparents and uncle Donís farm and that love of life remained through the years. Herb was in the army spending time in Germany. While there he earned medals in (rifle) marksman, sharpshooter (carbine) and good conduct. Herb worked for Pepsi Cola after returning from the service, then Roadway Express retiring in October 1998 after 30 years. He loved to be outside enjoying the things God provided. You could find him cutting wood, mowing lawns, working in his garden or helping someone else. He volunteered at the Manna House 2 days a week for 5 years until his health no longer permitted. He loved his kids and grandkids. His grandsons were his ìpartnersî and the girls were his ìsweetie piesî. He enjoyed going places with the JOY Club and helping where he could in church. Serving the Lord was his #1 goal. When the groundbreaking for this facility was to take place here on this property, a severe storm came up and it had to be moved. Herb and Pastor Brinkley came out here and dug up dirt, put it in a bucket and took it there for the ìground breakingî. He and Bertha Infield were married November 25, 1960 in Cleveland, Oklahoma. He said ìShortyî as he called her, celebrating 50 years last Thanksgiving. He was proceeded in death by his parents and a brother David and a step grandson Josh Ward. Surviving are son Cliff and Laura Carter of Craig, Colorado and daughter Cindy and Wes Duke of Waxahachie, Texas. Sister Marcheta Carter of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sister-in-law Beverly Carter of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Grandsons Chris Matthews of Verdigris, Oklahoma, Caleb Carter of Verdigris and Mitchell Duke of Waxahachie, Texas. Granddaughters Ciara Carter of Verdigris, Oklahoma and Kelsey Duke of Waxahachie, Texas. And a host of precious relatives and dear friends and neighbors.
