Helen Sue Smith

Sue Smith of Cleveland, Oklahoma passed from this life to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday morning May 18, 2010 with her family at her side at the age of 71 years. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Western Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Gowdy officiating and assisted by Rev. David Head. Musical selections will be provided by Robert Annett, Willa Gowdy, Phyllis Jeffcoat and Dorothea Hendricks. Burial will be in the Nowata Memorial Cemetery at 4:00 pm in Nowata, Oklahoma on the family plot under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Sue was born June 29, 1938 she was the daughter of Fess Ervin and Helen Frances (Hamm) Waller. As a young girl Sue began her education in the small community of Dawson, Oklahoma. She later attended the Talala Schools where she graduated in 1956. During her time in school Sue was very active in 4-H. She entered many competitions winning numerous awards for her crafts and livestock she showed. Sue missed out on a opportunity of appearing on television when she was younger because of her love for 4-H and not wanting to miss a judging competition. Sue was also a very active and award winning basketball player. She set the high school individual scoring record in a game her senior year. Shortly after high school Sue was united in marriage and raised her four children in Talala, Ramona as well as Ochelata. In 1963, Sue accepted employment with Phillips in Bartlesville in the computing department. She continued working there until 1975, when she returned to do what she loved most sewing. Sue began working in Nowata for JoRaís, Inc. making clothing and later learned the art of upholstery. In 1977, Sue moved to Cleveland, Oklahoma and began working at Unique Upholstery. Then on April 17, 1980, Sue was united in marriage to Jerry Smith. In 1992, Sue continued what she loved sewing; and opened up Dream Skeems, Inc an embroidery shop on Broadway in Cleveland. Sue operated the business until March 1, 1997 when she sold the operation and retired. After her retirement Jerry followed suit and the couple began doing what they enjoyed most which was traveling. Sue and Jerry would travel to South Texas during winters and Colorado in the summers. During the trips to Texas they would stay near Rio Hondo, San Benito or Harlingen. Through out the summers Sue and Jerry would spend their time in South Fork, Colorado continuing to stay at the same facility for over 21 years straight. Sue was also active in the Preceptor Beta Muís as well as the Silver Thread Quilterís Guild in Creed, Colorado. Most of all, Sue was dearly devoted to her church Western Heights Baptist Church. Sue would often take ìGirls Tripsî. They would visit many places which might include craft shows, Colorado or even a cruise in the Caribbean. Sue had many things she loved which would often include her loving husband Jerry, children, sister, grandchildren, family and friends that she loved dearly. The one thing that Sue loved the most in life was her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. She would devote daily from 5:00 am till 5:30 her time to read the bible and meditation as she watched the sun rise on the new day. Sueís love and dedication will be greatly missed by all as well as her wonderful smile which even caught the attention of President Dwight Eisenhower. Survivors include her loving husband Jerry of the home four children, Rob Harper and his wife Sandy Jo of Jay, Oklahoma, Sandy Harper of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Terri Day and her husband Tim of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Dusty Harper and his wife Jody of Talala, Oklahoma, three step children Jenifer Pierce of Nowata, Oklahoma, Jerold Smith of Norman, Oklahoma, Jeff Smith of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, one sister Bobbie Haile and her husband James of Edmond, Oklahoma, seven grandchildren Travis Harper, Christi Harper, Toby Day, Tucker Day, Ashley Schondel, Brandon Harper, Chelsea Hamilton, four great grandchildren Bryson, Davin, Cadyn and Talan as well as a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her brother Fess Waller Jr. Church Services will be held 1:00 pm Friday, May 21, 2010 at Western Heights Baptist Church with Rev.
