Helen M. Edgerton was born May 29, 1928 in Stroud, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of William Burl and Nina Arlan Williams. Helen moved with her family at the age of two to Cleveland where she was raised and attended school. She graduated from Cleveland High School in 1946.
Upon graduation from high school, Helen accepted employment as a secretary for the Johnson Oil Refinery. She continued to work at the refinery until she was married to David Glen Edgerton on December 28, 1949 in Cleveland. The couple made their initial home in Stillwater, then moving to Tulsa for a short time before residing in Cushing from 1951 until 1972. They had three children, Steven, Mark and Marcia. In 1972 they moved to Grants, New Mexico when David was transferred by Kerr-McGee Corporation. David passed away on January 20, 1978.
Shortly after the death of her husband, Helen returned to Cleveland. She immediately accepted employment with Irene Raney, working as a florist at Cleveland Flowers. She continued to work for Cleveland Flowers until her retirement in 1992.
Helen was an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher for many years and was a member of the Dorcus Class. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and many different crafts. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was especially proud of her family and was extremely close to her grandchildren, she loved them dearly.
Helen passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at her home in Cleveland at the age of seventy-four years, nine months and nine days. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Bill Williams and an infant sister, Evelyn Williams.
Helen is survived by her two sons, Steven Glen Edgerton, Cushing, Oklahoma and Mark and Sheila Edgerton, Cleveland, Oklahoma; daughter, Marcia Kay and Doug Gholson, Pittsburg, Texas; nine granddaughters, one grandson, and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Cleveland with Dr. Larry Wilson officiating. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
