Guy Cowen

Guy Earl Cowen passed from this life on January 21, 2024, at the age of 90, in Cleveland, OK.

Gus was born on March 24, 1933, in the rural Keystone Area of Cleveland, Oklahoma, the son of James and Mildred Bertie (Sory) Cowen. Gus grew up and attended school in Cleveland, where he later graduated with the Class of 1951. During his time in school, Gus was an active member of the Cleveland football and basketball teams. Gus was later united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Carlece Mitchell on September 29, 1951, at the First Christian Church in Cleveland. Gus worked in the oilfield and later gained employment at Baker Oil Tools. He later began working for Ladd Petroleum as superintendent in Houston. For the last 20-plus years, Gus was a consultant in the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico. He earned an excellent reputation for his knowledge of downhole and ultra-deep oil wells. After 65 years of working, Gus retired at the age of 81. Later in life, Gus and Carlece became active in buying, selling, breeding, and running Thoroughbred horses.

Survivors include two sons, Robb Cowen of Salado, Texas; Mitch Cowen and his wife Shelley of Cleveland, Oklahoma; one brother, Duane Cowen of Kansas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Carla, wife Carlece, grandson Gerad Cowen, siblings James Cowen, Johnny Cowen, Wilbert Cowen, Charles Cowen, Mae Robinson, Mary Ann Kilpatrick, and Karens Sue Burrow.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. Friends and family may visit an online guest book and memorial page for Guy at www.chapman-black.com.
