George Springs

George Springs passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the OSU Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 93 years, three months and seven days. George was born January 14, 1920, in Galatia, Illinois. He was the son of Ross and Marie Ellen (Johnson) Springs. George was raised in and attended school in Galatia. At the completion of his education George gained employment with at Russelís Feed Store in Galatia. He drove a truck delivering poultry and livestock feed to general stores in the rural areas. On June 6, 1940, George joined the United States Army in Peoria, Illinois. He served his country as a combat infantryman as well as a military policeman. His duties took him too many places including Rhineland and Central Europe. During his time in the military he earned the following decorations and citations: Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, American Defense Service Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon. Following his honorable discharge on November 30, 1945, from Camp Chaffee Arkansas, George moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. George soon gained employment with Frisco Trucking Lines where he worked for over 19 years. George was later united in marriage to the love of his life Frieda May Geurin on October 27, 1967. The couple established their initial home in Tulsa. Following the closure of Frisco Trucking, George began working for Katy Railroad as a truck driver. He worked there until 1982. He was also a longtime member of the Teamsters Union. In March of 1979, George and Frieda moved to Cleveland to their current home where they have continued to reside. After his retirement in 1982, George began working part time in the oil fields for Doug Sparks. He also helped his son doing carpentry work part time. Gardening and yard work was his favorite pastime. He also built numerous bird houses. George and Frieda took many trips. They visited Colorado, New Mexico, Corpus Christi, and many times to Branson in their travel trailer. They would also return to Illinois to visit his family. Most of all in life George loved being around his family; who were very important to him. Frieda described George as ìthe best husband in the world.î Survivors are his loving wife Frieda of the home; children Richard Deane Springs and wife Patti of Chester, Arkansas, Phillis McDaniel and husband Ronnie of Owasso, Oklahoma, Charles Eugene Springs and wife Barbara of Bristow, Oklahoma, step children Dennis Michael Maimbourg and wife Janet of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Debra Sue Springs of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Dena Kay Aaron and husband Jerry of Cleveland, Oklahoma, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son George "Butch" W. Springs; two sisters Mary Burlison and Dorothy Springs Memorial Services will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Terlton First Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Watkins officiating. Burial will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
