Gary Kane Hicks of Edmond, Oklahoma passed away at his home on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at the age of 78. The son of Orville and Katherine Hicks, Gary was born on October 29, 1938 in Pawnee, OK. He was a 1956 graduate of Cleveland High School where he earned All-State honors in football, basketball, and track. In 1957, Gary joined the United States Air Force where he honorably served for 4 years. On May 12, 1961 Gary married Gwendolyn Copelin, and together they enjoyed Gary's 40 year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone which took them to Ponca City, Bartlesville, Ardmore, Broken Arrow, Tahlequah, and Owasso. Additionally, he was a member of the Masonic and Elk lodges.
Gary was a lifetime lover of sports, especially the Oklahoma Sooners, and he rarely missed the opportunity to watch them play. He was a wonderful man who was loved and respected by those who had the opportunity to know him. Gary had a wonderful sense of humor and was a kind, dedicated, loving family man who loved his children and grandchildren immensely. He was a rock for his wife, Gwen, whom he loved with all his heart. They were happily married for 55 years.
Gary is survived by his wife, Gwen; his daughter and son-in-law Duska and Todd Mills of San Antonio, TX; his son and daughter-in-law John and Vionette Dunn of Nichols Hills, OK; his sister and brother-in-law Suzanne and Gary Jones of Muskogee, OK; grandchildren Britni Mills, Blake Mills, Erika Mills, Mason Mills, Jack Dunn, Annie Dunn, Ellie Dunn, Zachary Dunn, and Mia Miles-Dunn; and great grandchildren Cole Mills, Brooklyn Mills, and Preston Mills. In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by three of his children, Donya, Teri Dawn, and Damon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, December 19 at the First Christian Church of Cleveland, with David Logsdon officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Friends may share a memory with the family at www.chapman-black.com.
