Graveside services for Garl Lee Spain will be held 11:00 am Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Oak Hill Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Laughlin officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Garl was born on May 20, 1921 in rural Custer County near Weatherford, Oklahoma. He was the son of Roy Lee and Jessie (McCall) Spain. As a young child Garl received his education in the rural Weatherford area. Several years following his graduation Garl joined the United States Navy during World War II. During his time in the military Garl served his duty with the 85th Naval Construction Battalion. Garl served in the South Pacific as well as the Aleutian Islands. On October 18, 1944, Garl was united in marriage to Bonnie Ella Willis in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. On November 15, 1945, Garl was honorably discharged and returned to Oklahoma. Garl began working on the wheat harvest starting in North Texas and following it until the completion of the harvest. He would drive and repair the combines while Bonnie worked preparing breakfast lunch and dinners for the crew. The two did that for several years prior to moving to Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Garl gained employment with Anthony Martin in Sand Springs as a mechanic and would join the harvest during the summers. Finally in the 1968, he moved to his current home. Garl also worked as a mechanic for the Chevrolet Dealer in Cleveland for many years. He had customers travel long distances for him to repair he vehicles. In 1983, Garl retired from working full time as a mechanic and began doing what he loved. Working on his farm as well as raising cattle. Garl was a man that believed being honest and fair was a major part of life. He also had a work ethic that was far above many and instilled that trait into his family and everyday life. He loved to go fishing as well as travel to see family. Garl enjoyed the time that he was outside working on the farm or mowing the pastures. The one thing that Garl enjoyed the most in life was being with his family that he loved dearly. Garl Lee Spain passed from this life on Monday, June 11, 2012 at his home near Olive at the age of 91 years and twenty two days. Survivors are his two daughters Lee Ann Studebaker and her husband Justin of Silver City, Oklahoma, Jana Kay Bedillion and her husband Stewart of Monroe, Louisana, one sister Frances Gripe and her husband Charles of Dodge City, Kansas; grandchildren Katie Lee Bedillion of Monroe, Louisana, Caleb Bedillion and his wife Allison of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Grant Studebaker of Atlanta, Georgia, sister in law Betty Spain of Bosie, Idaho . In addition to his parents Garl was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie and one brother Eldon Spain.
