Floyce L. Sissom

Floyce L. Sissom was born September 27, 1914 on a farm near Wewoka, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Alzie Tabitha and James Calveston Veston Ogburn. Floyce was raised and attended school in Wewoka, graduating from Wewoka High School in 1932.

Upon graduation from high school, Floyce attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, which at the time was one of three normal schools established in eastern Oklahoma in 1909 to provide teacher certification. Upon certification, Floyce taught business in different schools in south central Oklahoma until moving to California during World War II. While in California, she worked in a shipyard as a clerical worker and secretary.

Floyce was married to Sidney George Colebank on March 30, 1946 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in California for a short time before owning and operating a hunting lodge in Moffat, Colorado for a few years. They later returned to California and Sidney passed away on April 12, 1958.

Upon the death of her husband, Floyce returned to Oklahoma and resumed her teaching career. She taught business in numerous schools in Oklahoma, teaching the last five years of her career in the Cleveland Public School System. Floyce was married to Alvin Verliss Sissom on March 25, 1965 in Keystone, Oklahoma. Alvin and Floyce made their home in the Cleveland area for nearly forty-one years until Alvin passed away on March 20, 2006. The couple enjoyed traveling in their trailer and especially liked to travel to Colorado. Shortly after the death of Alvin, Floyce moved to the Cimarron Pointe Care Center in Mannford.

Floyce was a member of the Westport Baptist Church and especially enjoyed her church family. She was always a teacher and even after her retirement often commented about missing the children. She often expressed her philosophy about teaching children as if you respect them, they will respect you.

Floyce passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007 at the Cimarron Pointe Care Center in Mannford at the age of ninety-two years, three months and twenty-nine days. In addition to her husbands, Floyce was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Nola Lorene Ogburn Medlin and Ruby Alzie Ogburn; two brothers, Luther Calveston Ogburn and an infant brother.
