Obituary
Etta was born in Cogar, Oklahoma on October 10, 1918, the daughter of Walter and Jessie (Forbes) Black. Etta graduated from Minco High School in 1935, then attended college in Edmond, Oklahoma for one year before moving to Greeley, Colorado. She also attended the University of Northern Colorado where she later graduated. Etta enjoyed hiking around Estes Park and cross country skiing in the area of Bear Lake. During World War II, Etta moved to Portland, Oregon and worked in Willamette Shipyard as a welder. Upon returning to Greeley she worked as a cashier in a clothing store. Later she accepted employment at a larger chain store as assistant manager and customer service manager. This chain store is known here as The Stage. She was proud to still receive her 30% employee discount. She moved to Cleveland with her invalid mother in 1981. After her mother’s death, she went to Hissom as a foster grandparent for eight years.
Etta loved children as well as traveling. She took many trips to with her family and friends. Etta was a very active member and supporter of the First United Methodist Church in Cleveland.
Etta Black passed away on Friday, July 7, 2017, at her home in Cleveland, Oklahoma at the age of 98 years old.
She is survived by her nephew Dr. Ed T. and Joy Black of Cleveland, Oklahoma and many other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Etta was preceded in death by her brother Oscar Black.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Rev. Sandra Bach officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Friends may share a memory with the family online at www.chapman-black.com.
