Esther Ethelyn Vaughan

Esther Ethelyn Vaughan was born July 10, 1918 in Wisdom, Montana. She was the daughter of Elliott and Anna (Pogue) Vaughan. At an early age she resided for a short time with her aunt as her mother had moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma looking for work. At the age of two, Esther moved to Tulsa and was raised and attended school there, graduating from Central High School in 1936. Esther and her mother, Anna loved watching movies together. As her mother Anna was a seamstress, she would often recreate clothing that they saw together on the movies for Esther to wear. Shortly after graduation from high school, Esther attended the Oklahoma School of Business in Tulsa where she learned shorthand and secretarial skills. For the next several years, Esther worked as a secretary for oil companies in the Tulsa area. She and her mother later moved to Wichita when she accepted employment with Gulf Oil Company for a couple of years before returning to Tulsa. After moving back to Tulsa, Esther established her own secretarial business, Mayo Secretarial which she operated for many years, retiring in 1981. Esther resided for nearly thirty five years with her mother in a duplex near Cherry Street in Tulsa. After the death of her mother in 1975, Esther relocated to the Tulsa Pythian Apartments in Tulsa when progress in the Cherry Street area required her home to be removed. She later moved to Cleveland and resided with her cousin and her husband, Mary Jane and Doug Reed. In 2001, Esther moved to the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home where she resided until the time of her death on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the age of ninety-two. Esther loved cats and always enjoyed their company throughout her life. She was an extremely intelligent person and spent countless hours reading magazines and news articles to remain abreast of current activities. Esther was never married and is survived by her cousins, Mary Jane Reed and her husband, Doug, Cloan Goodman, Jim Pogue and his wife, Wilodean, all of Cleveland, Oklahoma; numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, August 20, 2010 at the Chapel of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Chaplain John Lay of Sequoyah Hospice officiating.
