Emily Jewel Fambrough was born July 5, 1913 on an oilfield settlement, outside of Holdenville, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of William Claud and Georgia Sadie Caroline (Winkler) Chafin. She attended Pharaoh School near Okemah where she graduated from high school in 1931.
Upon graduation from high school, Jewel attended a teacher college in southern Oklahoma where she obtained her associate degree and teaching certificate. Jewel then taught in several one room schools in south central Oklahoma for a few years before moving to California with her family.
Jewel returned to Oklahoma in the early 1940 and was married to Garland Meade Fambrough in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The couple made their initial home in Borger, Texas and then later moved to Amarillo where their only child was born, Joe Claud Fambrough, Sr. The couple them moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where Jewel worked as an executive secretary for a couple of oil companies, retiring with Amerada Hess Corporation, an oil exploration and production company, in 1975.
After Jewel retired, Garland and Jewel traveled for many years throughout the United States and Mexico in a travel trailer. They were members of several travel clubs and made friends all over the country. Mr. Fambrough preceded her in death in September of 1985.
Jewel was a longtime member of the Ranch Acres Baptist Church in Tulsa and after moving to Cleveland in 2003, attended the Western Heights Baptist Church. Jewel enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting. She also liked to paint and was a pretty good artist. Jewel loved to tell stories to her family and friends and especially loved spending time with them
Jewel passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home at the age of ninety-four. In addition to her husband, Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ruby Schuler, Pearl Crawford and Claudine Slagle; and a brother, Joe Chafin.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Joe Claud and Dawn Marie Fambrough, Sr. of Cleveland, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Joe Claud Fambrough, Jr. of Drumright, Oklahoma, Jud Clay Fambrough of Drumright, Oklahoma, Sean Myles Brady of Cleveland, Oklahoma and Mariah Nicole Brady of Cleveland, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Burial will be under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
