Ella Jean Mae Powell Fallin
January 14, 1923 - November 28, 2020
Ella "Jean" Mae Powell Fallin, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many, passed from this life on November 28, 2020. Ella Jean was born January 14, 1923 in Hominy, Oklahoma, to Janet and Albert Joseph 'Jack' Powell. After graduating from Hominy High School in 1941, she attended the Oklahoma College for Women, where she earned a Certificate in Education in 1943. She then returned close to home and her first teaching position was in Barnsdall. She wasn't there long, however, as her childhood love, William S. 'Bill' Fallin, asked her to marry him. He was stationed with the United States Coast Guard in Florida. After the wedding, she joined him and in 1945, following World War 11, they returned to Hominy where they were lifelong residents.
Jean was the eldest child of her parents and grew up with much pride in the family business, the Powell Funeral Home. She had two siblings, Jack G. and Cara Lee, who throughout their lives and with their families, brought each other great support and laughter. During her childhood years, they were active in the First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir. She sang for many funeral services and was also active in the Hominy High School Glee Club where she won numerous solo vocal contests. Her love of music didn't end when she finished her secondary education, as she continued for many years with The Melodious Moms, a harmonious group of up to eight ladies who sang at various community programs.
Upon returning to Oklahoma in 1945, Jean and Bill helped Uncle George Brock with his Ford car dealership. After his death, they took it over and it was renamed, Bill Fallin Ford. After Bill's death, the business was passed to their son Scott and his wife Dixie. Jean and Bill had four children: Steve, Sandra, Sheryl and Scott, who gave Jean eleven grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren, and to whom she was their beloved Mama Jean.
Mama Jean was a gentle giant, not in stature, but in her inner and physical strength. For many years, she diligently walked one to three miles every single day for exercise and loved reading the Tulsa World newspaper and Newsweek magazine. She loved going to Tulsa to meet friends for lunch and attend the Town Hall series, and a few of them even had great times making trips to the horse races. She particularly enjoyed trips to Hot Springs with them. She loved the fine arts, attending the theater and Broadway plays, and watching college football. Her grandsons were often amazed at her knowledge of the teams and players of the weekly lineup. Perhaps her most fond memories with those she loved and their time together were at the Hominy Lake.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Bill Fallin, two children Sheryl Soost and Scott Fallin and granddaughter Misty Fallin. She is survived by her children Steve and Judy Fallin and Sandra Drummond; her grandchildren and their families, Lynn and Brad Swanson, Jana Drummond, Julie Drummond Owen, Craig and Marina Fallin, Brian and Kim Fallin, Jennifer and Rich D'Aquisto, Ginger and Tommy Sexton, Laura and Chad Ihrig, Kelly Fallin Kelly, and Jill and Matt Workman; in addition to many loved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will not be held at this time due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns. The family will gather at a later time for a joint burial of Jean and her daughter Sheryl's ashes at the Albert Joseph Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy.
