Douglas L. Reed, Jr., lifelong Cleveland, Oklahoma resident, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa at the age of seventy-seven. Doug was born on November 9, 1933 near Cleveland on a family farm south of town, just west of the railroad depot and tracks He was the son of Douglas L. Reed, Sr. and Waverly (Bigler) Reed. Doug was raised and attended school in Cleveland through the eleventh grade and graduated from Amarillo High School in Texas in 1951. He worked during the summers throughout high school at the Wear-Ever Cookware Company operated by his Uncle George in the packaging and shipping department. He remained in Amarillo his senior year where he graduated. Upon graduation, Doug continued to work at the cookware plant for a while before moving back to Cleveland and accepting employment with Sheffield Steel upon his return. Doug was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. He was inducted into the service of his country on August 14, 1956 and remained on active duty until August 14, 1958 when he transferred to the United States Army Reserve. After his discharge he returned to Cleveland continuing service to his country in the National Guard. In 1958 Doug began working for Lavelle Schornick ìRed Dotî at the Red Dot Motor Supply. He purchased the business in 1972 with his brother, Jack and they operated the company together until 1978 when their partnership dissolved. Doug was married to Mary Jane (Pogue) Quick on August 15, 1982. In 1990, the couple moved the business from the northwest Corner of Broadway and Caddo a few block west to 401 West Caddo. They erected a new parts store and took over the Sunoco dealership and kept right on meeting their customersà needs. They managed to make the transition to the new store without missing a day of work, keeping both stations open temporarily until the move was completed. Red Dots was much more that just a parts store/gas station. Doug also provided wrecker service and maintained a full-time mechanic on duty for all kinds of auto repairs. Additionally, Doug was considered one of the premier radiator repairman in Northeastern Oklahoma. Mary Jane worked with Doug at Red DotÃs until their retirement in 1996. Doug was a member of the Hebron Masonic Lodge in Cleveland and the Tulsa Scottish Rite. He was personally responsible for encouraging his son, Greg and grandson, Grant to become Master Mason. He was a generous and caring person that always looked for the best in those around him. He will be remembered by many people of the Cleveland community that he assisted with the repair of their automobiles even if they didnÃt have the funds to pay. He provided automobiles from the wrecker yard at no cost to many people in the area. Doug was an accomplished cook; he loved preparing all types of food for his family and often provided dishes to his church, First United Methodist and to the Hebron Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed preparing holiday meals and was already working on the Thanksgiving menu for his family at the time of his passing. He subscribed to many cooking magazines which he enjoyed reading and trying out new recipes. He was an avid baker and will be remembered for his coconut cream pie as well as many other baked goods and deserts. Doug was also a brew master and enjoyed making home brew. He watched Wheel of Fortune nightly and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Reed of the home; son and his wife, Gregory and Robin Quick of Cleveland; granddaughter and her husband, Adrian and Ethan Clark of Sapulpa; grandson, Grant Quick of Tulsa, Oklahoma; half brother and his wife, Mike and Brenda Descamps of Springfield, Missouri; half niece and nephew, Ashley and Jason Descamps; nephew, Mike Reed of Cleveland, Oklahoma and a niece, Linda Martin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Douglas L. Reed, Sr.; his mother, Waverly Descamps; brother, Jack Reed and a sister, Patricia Reed. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, Nov. 19, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Cleveland. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Pallbearers were his brothers from the Hebron Lodge and military honors were provided by the United States Army.
