Funeral Services for Dewey Burgess of Cleveland are to be held 10:00 am, Thursday, April 1, 2004 in the Sanctuary of the Church of Christ with Jim Foster and Robert Prater officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
Dewey Eldon Burgess was born December 2, 1916 in Moody, Missouri to James Oscar and Elmina (Hoggett) Burgess. At the age of seven the Burgess family moved from Southeastern Missouri to Terlton, Oklahoma. Dewey attended school and later graduated from Terlton Schools. Dewey was united in marriage to Ruth Margurette Storm in Jennings, Oklahoma on January 28, 1939. He soon started to farm in the Terlton area. Dewey remained farming until the 1950Ãs when he began pumping oil wells until 1964. He later accepted employment with the Terlton School District as a custodian. Dewey remained working as the school custodian for over 14 years when he retired in 1978. Shortly after his retirement he then began working at the Cleveland Primary School part time as the custodian for a short time.
Dewey loved to squirrel hunt, repair small engines as well as spending countless hours talking on his CB radio. He was also a devoted member of the Church of Christ in Cleveland.
Monday March 29, 2004 in Tulsa, Oklahoma Dewey went to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 87 years 3 months and 27 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; son Dewey Junior Burgess, two brothers and three sisters as well as a grandson Mark.
Survived by his wife of over 65 years Ruth of the home; six sons and their wives, Tom and Elsie Burgess of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Gary and Rita Burgess of Prue, Oklahoma; Ray and Dottie Burgess of Manhattan, Kansas; Kenneth and Loraine Burgess of Mannford, Oklahoma; Les and Teresa Burgess of Blackburn, Oklahoma; Steve and Nancy Burgess of Terlton, Oklahoma; three daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Bill Phillips of Cushing, Oklahoma; Linda and Lawrence Pettit of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Joann and Jim Fugate of Noble, Oklahoma; 27 grandchildren, 38 great Grandchildren as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
