Derias Ned Johnson, 84, Mayor of Osage, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Derias was born December 18, 1933, in Stuart, Oklahoma. He was the son of Ned and Irma Bess (Ownsbey) Johnson. As a young child Derias grew up in Stringtown, Oklahoma until he was nine years old moved to Osage, Oklahoma. Derias began attending school in Osage was raised by his step Grandma Handrich which he called Mother Handrich and her bachelor son Winfred “Wimpy”. Following the completion of his education, Derias was drafted into the services of his country and shortly medically discharged. He returned to Osage and later united in marriage to Carol L. Sutterfield on July 11, 1958. The two established their home in Osage where they have continued to reside.
Derias worked for a seismograph company in Durant then later for the rail road. He has also been employed by National Tank and worked the majority of his life at the Ford Dealership in Cleveland, Hominy, Pawhuska and Skiatook for many years. He was last employed at Red Dot for Doug Reed as a mechanic when he retired in 1995. Derias was a very active part of his community. He has been a council member for many years and currently serving as Mayor of Osage for the past 20 plus years. Derias took care of many things in Osage for five dollars a month. He mowed and maintained the cemetery for numerous years, tended to the park which he checked on daily as well as helping those in need on numerous occasions.
Derias loved being outdoors. His favorite things to do were fishing and hunting. Derias spent many hours on the bank waiting on the big one to get on his line.
Survivors are his loving wife of over 59 years Carol of the home, two children Rhonda Mooney of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Alvin Johnson of Osage, Oklahoma; half brother Michael Glenn Johnson of Santa Fe, Texas; half sisters Donna Kirkwood of Houston, Texas, Gwen Upchurch of McAlester, Oklahoma; two grandchildren Jason Cavin of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Jolene Mooney of Cleveland, Oklahoma; three great grandchildren Jayce Cavin., Bryce Cavin, Darius Mooney and a host of other relatives and friends that will mourn his passing. Derias was preceded in death by father Ned Johnson, mother Irma Handrich and step father Alfred Handrich.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday December 29, 2017, at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Garry McDevitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Osage Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Friends may share a memory with the family or online at www.chapman-black.com.
