Delores Bernadine Chaney, 92, of Cleveland, Oklahoma, died Monday, January 15, 2018, at her home in Cleveland, Oklahoma, surrounded by her family.
Delores was born April 2, 1925, in Great Bend, Kansas. She was the daughter of Rudolph and Theresia (Riedl) Mauler. As a young girl, Delores was raised and received her education in Great Bend. Following the completion of her education, Delores was united in marriage to Richard Chaney in 1943. During that time the couple resided in Olmitz, Kansas. They later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma before settling in Hallett in the early 1970’s. Delores helped her family tend to their children as well as helped with the family farm. In the early 1990’s, Delores moved to Cleveland where she became a “Hub” for her kids & grandkids. Her door was always unlocked…providing a place to go in between school activities, after school snacks, uniform changes, coffee breaks, life talks, and sometimes a nap. Delores worked at several odd jobs during her time including helping Richard with his masonry business, a stint at Howard Johnson’s, babysitting, sewing, and had an outstanding reputation for her piece work ironing.
She loved playing bunco and bingo at the Westport Senior Citizens. Delores also enjoyed quilting and couldn’t wait to make her daily trip to the Hickory House. Christmas dinner was always a ritual in the Chaney family, which was the Saturday before Christmas every year for decades. As the family grew, Delores was proud that her girls, and their families, made a point to continue this tradition and created memories for even her great-grandkids to enjoy. Delores was known for making the fruit-filled German pastry “Kuchen” for her family and friends, which is still being made by her daughters and granddaughters. She gardened for many years, putting back the best dill pickles around. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and also enjoyed attending the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Survivors are three children Kay Pulley of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Bobbie Henderson and her husband Art of Westport, Oklahoma, Roseanne Matlock and her husband Gary of Olive, Oklahoma; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and friends. Delores was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, two daughters Judy Starr and Pat Hulvey; two brothers Jerome Mauler, Bud Mauler and one sister Margaret Schrieber.
