DeLois Ann Hickson passed from this life to her heavenly home on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Clarehouse, a community home providing loving care for people in the last month of life in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of seventy-seven.
Ann was born on October 24, 1938 in Mannford, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Horace Melton and Frances Virginia (Clegg) Box. She was raised in Mannford where she received her education, graduating from Mannford High School in 1956.
A few months prior to graduation, Ann was married to Robert Dean Hickson in Terlton, Oklahoma on January 12, 1956. The couple moved shortly after graduation to Tulsa where they established their initial home. They had four children, Bobby, Robin, Lucy and Russ. They later moved to Broken Arrow where they resided until they returned to Mannford in 1993.
In 1959, Ann attended Beauty College near Admiral and Yale in Tulsa and was then licensed as a cosmetologist in the State of Oklahoma. She worked as a hair dresser in the Tulsa area for the next thirty four years. During this time she worked in several shops in the Tulsa area including, Place of Coiffure and Lord’s and Lady’s Hair Salon, which she owned and operated.
Ann was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who adored her family and spent as much time as possible with them. She cared for her mother prior to her mother’s death for many years and was always available to her family and friends. Ann was a faithful member of the Mannford Assembly of God Church and taught Sunday school to the senior adult class for many years. She lived her life through one of her many favorite scriptures, Philippians 4:19, “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Ann loved listening to classical music but especially enjoyed, Enya. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music performed by Elvis Pressley. She was a gifted artist and was extremely talented in hand painting on canvas. She could often be found knitting as she made blankets and all type of clothing for her children and grandchildren. With the advent of technology and the internet, Ann could more than often be found looking at her IPAD until the early hours of the morning.
Bob and Ann enjoyed traveling and often traveled to California to visit Ann’s sister, Maxine. She took a couple of memorable trips to Europe, taking her in-laws, J. D. and Lucille Hickson on one occasion to Germany and Austria. She was a member of the Mannford Garden Club and was extremely proud of her membership and participation in the Mannford Museum.
Ann is survived by her husband of sixty years, Robert Hickson of the home in Mannford, Oklahoma; four children, Bobby and Susan Hickson of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Robin Sonsini of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Lucille Deann and Chris Feather of Bixby, Oklahoma, and Russell Damond Hickson of Coweta, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Natalie Sonsini, Nicole Sonini, Samuel Hickson, Ashlee Feather, David Feather, Cindy Feather, Nicholas Hickson and Aiden Hickson; two great-grandsons, Brandon and Ryan; brother, Clyde and Dorothy Box of Florida; amd a sister, Maxine Whelchell of Habor City, Califonia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace Melton and Frances Virginia Box; amd
three brothers, Bill Box, Gene Box and Melvin Box.
Cremation arrangements were entrusted to the Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials to Clarehouse at www.clarehouse.org or 7617 South Mingo Road, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74133.
