Della Marie Swan passed away on Monday, July 6, 2015, at her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 84 years, ten months and twenty days.
Della was born August 17, 1930 in Cleveland, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of the James Anderson and Ethel (Hendricks) Cooper. Della grew up in Cleveland and later graduated from Cleveland High School with the Class of 1948. Della was also a former football queen during the time she was in high school. Following high school Della began working at Johnson Refinery. She was later united in marriage to John Rogers Swan in 1950. The couple later moved to Cushing, Oklahoma where she worked as a secretary for a local insurance company. In 1955, Della and John were blessed with a child Cheryl Ann Swan. In 1959, Della moved to Tulsa and gained employment with Norvell Wilder Supply. Della soon accepted employment at Warren Petroleum as a file clerk in 1969. In 1973, Della met her soul mate and love of her life Clark Cummins through close friends Wayne and Jessie White. After several years working her way up through the company following several buyouts from Gulf and later Chevron; Della was the first woman purchasing agent in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During that time it was unheard of for a woman to be put into that position. Della worked for many years at Chevron until her retirement in 1992.
Della loved going to Eureka Springs. She also enjoyed taking her grandkids with her to different places while they were growing up. Della also attended every function that her grandchildren were a part of. Della was an avid Oklahoma State University Cowboy fan. She was also a season ticket holder for over 30 years. Most of all Della enjoyed life after retirement.
Della is survived by her daughter Cheryl Swan and her husband Pete Myers of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two grandchildren Tara Marshall and husband Anthony of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dallas Marie Swan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one great grandson Aiden James Marshall; nephew Bob Goshen and Kay of Cypress, Texas and numerous other relatives and many, many friends. Della was preceded in death by her siblings Delcie Goshen, Johnnie Dale Cooper and James Cooper, Jr.
The family wishes to thank Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living and Miller Hospice for the wonderful and personal care given to Della.
Services will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Hayhurst Funeral Home in Broken Arrow. Burial will be held 10:00 am Saturday with Pastor Chuck Breckenridge officiating. Friends may share a memory with the family at the funeral home or online at www.chapman-black.com
