Funeral services for Darrell Murray, 70, of Cleveland, Oklahoma will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Western Heights Baptist Church with Rev. David Head and Don Spangler officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
Darrell was born on December 26, 1946, in Joplin, Missouri. He was the son of Howard and Corinna Velda (Winchester) Murray. At a young age, Darrell moved with his family to Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Darrell began his education in Sand Springs, and he later graduated from Charles Page High School. Following high school, Darrell began working at St. Johns Medical Center in Tulsa. In the early 1970’s, Darrell moved to Terlton. During this time, he worked at Seismograph Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He later accepted employment with Aerlex firework factory in Terlton. In 1979, Darrell began working for Indian Electric as a pole truck driver. On November 29, 1991, Darrell was united in marriage to Marsha Selvey in Mount Vernon, Missouri. The two established their home in Cleveland where they have continued to reside. Darrell remained working at IEC for over 30 years at his retirement in 2009.
Darrell was a very talented individual. He was active in many capacities in the Cleveland Community as well as Pawnee County. Darrell participated in the Cleveland Community Theater, Pawnee Bill Wild West Show as well as being a part of The Watchmen Quartet. Darrell served as music minister for many years at Terlton First Baptist and Western Heights Baptist Church. Darrell was an avid and big supporter of Cleveland sports and sports enthusiast. He was very active in the Cleveland basketball, Cleveland and Cushing Take Down Club, Cleveland Quarterback Club, coached girls Little League Softball and a very avid supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals. Darrell and Marsha hosted several Super Bowl partys at their home and were always willing to travel to sporting activities.
Darrell and Marsha enjoyed traveling together with their travel partners Don and Judy. They have visited nearly every state in the lower 48, with usually no time constraints. Most travels would encompass a place that was not on the radar for most people. Taking time to go to places off the beaten path which usually were an excellent choice and experience. One of Darrell’s bucket list activities was to attend the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania in 2013. Darrell loved watching Guy Fieri and then traveling to places he suggested to eat at. Darrell and Marsha also loved going to New Mexico to the Navajo Reservation on a mission trip. They returned several times feeling compelled to help those on the reservation. Darrell has been a longtime member of the Western Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors are wife Marsha of the home; four children Shannon Murray and Dee Dee of Terlton, Oklahoma, Tammy Fittje and her husband Trent of Cushing, Oklahoma, Dawn Bellmon of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Bart Bellmon and his wife Alena of Mansfield, Texas; two brothers Garell Murray and his wife Susan of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Jim Murray and his wife Alisa of Salida, Colorado; sister Judy Spangler and her husband Don of Washington Courthouse, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren Dillon, Tristen, Dallas, Tayler, Sladon, Harley, Ty, Corinna, Teague, Tagun, J.C., Mason, Reece, Keah and one great-grandson J.J. and a host of other relatives and friends. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents.
