D. W. Sissom was born January 3, 1914 in Moore, Arkansas. He was the son of David Walter and Vida May (Lunsford) Sissom. He moved with his family in 1925 to the Sinnett area, south of Cleveland in rural Pawnee County, were he was raised and received his education.
Upon completion of his education, D. W. began a career working on farms in Pawnee and Creek County. He was married to Walsie Wanda Reese on October 7, 1933 in Cleveland, Oklahoma. The couple made their home together for over sixty-five years in the Terlton/Mannford area, raising two children, Helen and Don. D. W. worked for a few years at the Arkansas River Sand Plant, near Sand Springs. He also drove a school bus for the Mannford Public School System and then worked as a heavy equipment operator for Lester Sparks and Creek County Rural Water District Number 5. Mrs. Sissom preceded him in death on March 5, 1999.
D. W. was a member of the Church of Christ in Mannford. He liked spending time outdoors and enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed tinkering on all type of machines, including mowers and other engines.
D. W. passed away on January 13, 2008 at Cimarron Pointe Care Center in Mannford at the agoe of ninety-four years. In addition to his wife, Walsie, he was preceded in death by parents, David Walter Sissom and Vida May Sissom; five brothers, Alvin Sissom, George Sissom, Eldridge Sissom, Floyd Sissom and Armond Sissom; and five sisters, Ruby Almy, Zora Huff, Eunice Norwood and two infant sisters.
D. W. is survived by his daughter, Helen Scovil of Mannford, Oklahoma; a son and his wife, Donald and Joyce Sissom, of Terlton, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Donna Casey of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Debra Haus of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, David R. Sissom of Tulsa, OK, LeAnne Bushyhead of Mannford, Oklahoma and Lisbeth Cole of Mannford, Oklahoma; four great grandchildren, Caleb Bushyhead, Sky Bushyhead, Joshua Cole and Hannah Cole, all of Mannford, Oklahoma; brother and his wife, Calvin and Anna Sissom of Modesto, California; and two sisters, Fern and her husband, George Harvison of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Joyce Miller of Denison, Texas.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Church of Christ in Mannford with Tony Reesee officiating. Burial will be at the Oakhill Cemetery in Mannford under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be Granville Sissom, Earnest Sissom, David Almy, Kermit Derrick, John Sissom and Bill Alsip.
