Charlie Archerd was born August 14, 1903 in a log cabin, south of Madill in Indian Territory. He was the son of Henry Adlophus and Mary (Gayle) Archerd. He had two brothers and one sister. Charlie attended grade school in Madill and then moved frequently with his family to various places in Oklahoma as his father was employed as an Indian Agent with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They lived in Tahlequah, Wewoka, Admore, Holdenville, Chickasha and some other towns between 1910 and 1919.
In 1925, Charlie graduated from Chickasha High School and entered college at East Central State College at Ada. A year later he transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he studied mechanical engineering.
He was married to Cecil Lee Newell in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 22, 1930. During the same year, Charlie accepted employment as an engineer for the Texaco Refinery in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked for thirty-seven years, retiring at the age of sixty-four.
Upon his retirement, Charlie and Cecil moved to Hill & Dale Estate, south of Cleveland, where they resided the remainder of their married life. Cecil preceded him death on March 20, 1994 after nearly sixty-four years of marriage. Charlie remained in their home until March of 2001 when he moved to the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home.
Charlie was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Cleveland, Oklahoma. He loved to fish and talk. His greatest past time was talking about the fish that got away. His greatest joy in life was his twin granddaughters, Gina and Cheryl who spent many hours with him fishing in Keystone Lake. Charlie never met anyone he couldn't strike up a conversation with and everyone enjoyed talking to him. He was truly a likeable, kindhearted person that spent his life taking care of his family to the best of his ability. He was a good man, a good husband, a good Father and a good friend.
Charlie passed away on Friday, February 15, 2002 at the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home at the age of ninety-eight years, six months and one day. In addition to his wife, Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary; two brothers, Jack and Gayle; sister, Mattie Lou Majors; and a daughter, Rose Marie Archerd.
He is survived by a son and his wife, Paul and Jo Ann Archerd, Cleveland, Oklahoma; a daughter of Norman, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Steve Earl Saunders, Laura Marie Wright, Gina Diane Bowman and Cheryl Alyce Willman; and seven great-grandchildren,
